#Inflammation is one of the primary causes of #insulinresistance (and other cardiometabolic complications, like #heartdisease/#atherosclerosis). Underlying this is the connection between #fat mass (#obesity and #overweight) and inflammation (what was first called "subclinical chronic inflammation). We've long known that excess fat tissue leads to excess inflammation--it's like the fat tissue is causing the body to fight an infection that's not there. The humble macrophage is at the center of this. When fat mass expands, it welcomes macrophages into the neighborhood (especially visceral fat). These then become aggressive residents, actively producing and secreting pro-inflammatory cytokines that effectively carry the inflammatory signal throughout the body.
