One concept or idea from this class that will remember and will stick with me is intersectionality. Before this class I never knew about it. It is very interesting how many different types of oppressions can come together. #SOCL214

@EphraimW99 It’s very upsetting to see how hard and expensive it is to obtain a green card. Like you mentioned, I don’t think lot of people realize how hard it is for many people.

The application process for a green card is extremely more difficult than what lots of people seem to realize. There are four ways to apply as, the lottery, special person, employer or family. This process is also very expensive. #SOCL214

@MinglunWei I definitely agree. I had no idea of what redlining was until this video. That is very sad to think about. There is so much inequality all over the U.S.

Redlining was a way to divide people by their wealth. Those who had more money were provided with loans for houses but those who did not, were not able to get loans. One side of the redlining had nice homes and the low-income side did not. #SOCL214

@MattDrewANTH214 Yes I learned the same thing. It sort of doesn’t make much sense to me because the the programs are created for those that are being discriminated.

Affirmative action exists to redresses historic injustices or discrimination. The programs that provide better opportunities are being seen as unfair to other, which doesn’t make much sense. #SOCL214

@benjmai66883953 That's a good and interesting question. I also wonder if that happens in other racial communities as well. It is said that society accepts people who have lighter skin a lot more than those who have darker skin.

Chinese were seen as inferior this was known as the White Peril. They weren't accepted until the 1960's when an article was written. The model minority myth is a racial generalization. Due to this people saw all Asians as the same, no matter what country they were from. #SOCL214

Everyone has privileges because of certain things that others do not have. It’s not always a bad thing but some people may feel this way because not everyone has the same privileges. #SOCL214

@Swarty_24 I definitely agree. It really bothered me that their own family would try to change how their hair was. Fortunately they were able to love their hair and feel beautiful.

Its upsetting to see how people grew up being told that they need to fix their hair to look more beautiful. It was interesting to see that most of them were told by their grandparents because it shows how older people must have been told the same in past experiences. #SOCL214

@robinsontara84 I definitely agree with you! I don’t think that black representation should just be slavery but of so much more. It would be great to see better diversity in films!

It’s very upsetting to see how productions included black actors as criminals, slaves, and servants. It’s definitely great to see that times have changed and they are being better represented. I love how Black Panther could be an example of that greatness. #SOCL214

@AmandaHambey2 Yes I think intersectionality is very important because it shows the changes of oppressions when different ones are combined. Unfortunately we live in a world where there is many types of oppressions.

Intersectionality acknowledges and makes aware of the existence of different types of oppressions. It tries to understand how these oppressions change when they are combined. #SOCL214

@JordyIWNL It was very surprising to actually know the origin of the SATs. It’s very upsetting how those students were tested to see how well they can do in the classroom without even making it to the classroom.

Its surprising that the SAT was created to test other races and their ability to be in the same classroom as whites. It is nice to know that some universities are getting rid of the test because it can’t predict how well someone can do in college just based on a test. #SOCL214
