@thomasforth@purpleairplane1 Slough station drives me crazy. They have IR motion sensors hooked up to speakers which say don't run, and to hold the handrail on the steps. The steps fit six people abreast, yet everyone should hold the handrail?!
@JackTShaw Wokingham has been able to maintain spending levels, because it can decide on council tax locally, and that helps them significantly.
In Stoke-on-Trent, local council tax decisions have less impact. They're reliant on central government, someone not in Stoke, giving them money
@JackTShaw Wokingham residents/politicians have more local decision making, because they have more autonomy over 83% of their funding.
In Blackpool & Stoke-on-Trent, they only raise 38% locally from council tax
@JayneKirkham4@JackTShaw Authorities with more funding raised locally through council tax are less deprived. Authorities more dependent on funding from central government are more deprived
@JayneKirkham4@JackTShaw Wokingham is more able to go out it's own way.
Blackpool and Stoke-on-Trent are at the whim of central government funding decisions
An important issue. My thoughts 🧵
1. Pay matters. It is a labour market after all.
2. So does feeling valued more generally. Why for example don’t local authorities pay planners’ professional subscriptions? That hardly says we value your professional experience and competence
@public_finance_ A tricky situation in Nottingham, but an important reminder of the importance of getting things right by ensuring appropriate due diligence in local government finance
Looks like we will be getting the local government finance settlement today. As with last year it's being dealt with by a written statement, not an oral statement which would have allowed MPs to ask questions

My favourite (but also nemesis) is the A9 but I'm also quite fond of the A66, A82, and the A858, if we're sharing our deepest secrets - yeah the A830 isn't too bad either!
