The Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (AMOS) is an independent society representing the weather, climate and ocean sciences in Australia.
#Sydney has sweat through the warmest first 8 days of summer in 45 years based of the mean temperature (average of mins and maxs). For #Parramatta, it's been the warmest on record (data to 1965), although I substituted missing 1979 temps with data from Bankstown.
For our last Changing Climates article of the year we had a chat with @sarahinscience about what climate change means for the future of extreme weather events

⛈️#QLD thunderstorm outlook for today (9/9). Severe thunderstorms are possible about the southern #BorderRanges & #ScenicRim regions in #SEQLD later this afternoon and evening. Large hail, damaging wind gusts & heavy rainfall possible. Warnings if need: https://t.co/YDOhS14a4j
New paper led by Ruby Lieber and with @JosephineRBrown@ClimateFreund studies ENSO teleconnections with extremes. Ruby found amplification of teleconnections in many regions with global warming and this effect is stronger in models with strengthening ENSO https://t.co/jeMOK2U2se
Why is it so windy and why does #Melbourne tend to get big wind storms in early spring?
Outside of the tropics, the main fuel source for storms is a strong temperature gradient. The ocean is a slow beast. Temperature-wise, the ocean thinks it's still the middle of winter.
Ferocious #winds with gusts equivalent to a category 2 tropical cyclone have caused widespread damage across #Victoria in the last 24 hours, along with huge #waves and #flooding along the coast. 🌊 More at https://t.co/YQZTOTD11Z
