When I was a child I lived near a refugee hostel. Back then there was no detention. They were free to come and go. They were cared for, taught English and made ready to be Australians. We locals loved them. There was never any reason to introduce mandatory detention.

Aust govt just announced changes to enhance the Community Support Program (CSP), reducing the visa application charge (VAC) for the primary applicants by 60%, to $7,760 and entirely removing the VAC for family members. A good start, hopefully soon additional too @amnestyOz
