Two years ago today, on 24 September 2024, Junaid Jahangir @M_Junaidd was detained in UAE at the behest of Pakistani intelligence agencies. He remains in Al Wathba Prison, Abu Dhabi, without access to his family, friends, or lawyers!!

I have known Junaid @M_Junaidd for 15 years, and we were roommates in UAE for nine months. One thing I remember clearly is his “trust in UAE and its rule of law”.

When I left UAE in April 2024, Junaid chose to stay. He had other options, but he believed UAE was a “safe and law-abiding country” where he could focus on his career and can build his future, away from the persecution of PTI supporters by Pakistani intelligence agencies.

That belief in the UAE’s safety and rule of law was one of the reasons he felt secure staying there. But….

Five months later, while returning from Umrah, he was detained at Dubai Airport. For around 8 months, he was held in undisclosed custody before eventually being transferred to Al Wathba Prison in Abu Dhabi, in May 2025.

For two years, none of us, his family, his friends, or his lawyers, has been able to sit across from him or see him. His family waits weeks for a brief and occasional phone call. That short call is their only connection with their son !!

Think about what two years mean to a family: two years of birthdays missed, Eids spent apart, parents growing older waiting to see their son, and every morning waking up with the same unanswered questions !!

Two years later, his family is still waiting for something painfully simple: to see him and hold him again.

We respectfully appeal to the UAE leadership @MohamedBinZayed @HHShkMohd @HamdanMohammed @HHMansour @HHShkDrSultan @LadyVelvet_HFQ and authorities to look into Junaid’s case with compassion and fairness. Two years have already been taken from his life and from his family. Please allow him to return to the people who have been waiting for him every single day.
