In an interview with Kan News, I reaffirmed that Somaliland will independently determine its own course and freely choose the partnerships it pursues. No external force will dictate our actions or influence the relationships we establish. Somaliland remains steadfast in safeguarding its sovereignty and advancing partnerships founded on mutual respect and shared interests.

Dr Essa Kayd, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of #Somaliland, delivers a heartfelt message emphasizing Somaliland's rich history, its struggle for independence, and the ongoing quest for international re-recognition.
He highlights Somaliland's unique values, resilience, and calls on the global community and worldwide to support its sovereignty and stability in the Horn of Africa.
The story of Somaliland is not a recent one. @DrEssaKayd reminds global that the nation's journey began long before its independence over 66 years ago. Even before becoming a British protectorate, Somaliland governed itself through the rule of law, emphasizing justice, accountability, and communal responsibility. The people protected their land, resolved conflicts, and engaged in trade with nations worldwide.
Good to see more support for UK to recognise peaceful, democratic Somaliland. VERY MUCH IN British interests. I supported their protest today opposite Downing Street and said a few supportive words along with Lord Polak and others

Acknowledged at Home, Denied at the UN: #Somalia’s #Somaliland Genocide Contradiction
Somalia’s president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has acknowledged and publicly apologized for the genocide committed against the people of Somaliland by the Siad Barre regime, a position that sharply contrasts with statements made by Somalia’s envoy at the United Nations.
During yesterday’s UN Security Council meeting, Somalia’s ambassador to the UN, Abukar Balle, denied that genocide, triggering criticism from survivors, civil society groups, and observers who say the atrocities are extensively documented through eyewitness testimony, mass graves, and international human rights reports.
The contradiction between the Somali president’s acknowledgment and the UN envoy’s denial has reignited debate over historical accountability, truth, and justice for crimes committed in the late 1980s, when Somaliland cities including Hargeisa and Burao were subjected to large-scale destruction, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians.
Somaliland restored its sovereignty in 1991 and has since maintained its own governing institutions, security forces, and democratic processes.
