This chronology has been compiled independently, drawing upon historical records, official documents, published books, human rights reports, archival material, eyewitness testimonies, and other verifiable sources accumulated over several decades. Together, these sources present numerous allegations, documented incidents, and historical accounts relating to human rights violations, excessive use of force, and other abuses associated with security operations in Naga areas.
On 6 August 2026, the Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) issued a press communiquรฉ raising concerns over frisking and militarisation of civilian areas in Ukhrul and Kamjong by the Assam Rifles. According to the communiquรฉ, these actions have caused fear and hardship among civilians already living under heightened insecurity.
While this chronology focuses primarily on Naga areas, it also includes selected incidents elsewhere involving the Assam Rifles that are relevant to the broader discussion of accountability.
This chronology is not exhaustive. Numerous other incidents remain undocumented, unpublished, inaccessible, or preserved only in classified archives and private collections. The record spans hundreds of official files, books, reports, archival collections, and eyewitness testimonies accumulated over nearly two centuries.

The Assam Rifles is India's oldest paramilitary force. It traces its origins to 1835, when the British East India Company raised a small militia known as the Cachar Levy to protect colonial tea estates, trade routes, and administrative outposts in the North East. Over the following decades, the force was repeatedly reorganised and renamed as the Frontier Police, the Assam Military Police, and finally the Assam Rifles in 1917.
During the British colonial period, the force was primarily employed to secure the frontier, conduct expeditions, escort officials, suppress armed resistance, and extend colonial administration into the hill regions. Following India's independence in 1947, it was retained by the Government of India, gradually expanded into the country's principal frontier and counter-insurgency force in the North East, and has since operated under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs while remaining under the operational command of officers of the Indian Army.
Supporters regard the Assam Rifles as an essential force for border security and counter-insurgency. At the same time, human rights organisations, civil society groups, and affected communities have, over several decades, documented allegations of unlawful killings, torture, sexual violence, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, and other abuses during security operations, particularly in areas governed by the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). The chronology below compiles these incidents from published and archival sources.

A major arms recovery from #LoktakLake has once again drawn attention to the strategic use of the lake's floating #Phumdis as concealed hideouts for weapons and militant activities in Manipur. Security agencies believe the dense, floating biomass has long provided cover for the storage and movement of illegal arms, complicating counter-insurgency operations.
The recovery also highlights how the proliferation of illegal weapons has fuelled the prolonged violence in Manipur. Sophisticated arms have intensified clashes, increased casualties and hampered efforts to restore normalcy. Recovering hidden weapons caches and dismantling supply networks remain critical to curbing violence and strengthening peace and stability in the state.
