@amnesty#StopAmharaGenocideinEthiopia I wonder why Amnesty International kept silent on the Amhara Genocide in Ethiopia. Ethiopian Prime Minister has declared genocide on the Amhara people since he came to power in March 2018. Abiy Ahmed is a silent killer.

Ethiopia: The Cross Under Attack and the Jailing of Those Who Report It
Statement by the American Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee (AEPAC)
The American Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee (AEPAC) continues to monitor the worsening political and humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia and urges the international community not to ignore a situation that, if left unaddressed, could have profound consequences for Ethiopia, the Horn of Africa, and regional stability.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church—one of the world's oldest Christian churches with more than 65 million followers —has experienced an alarming increase in attacks against its faithful, clergy, monasteries, churches, and other places of worship. At the same time, journalists, writers, and public figures who have documented these attacks have increasingly faced arrest, detention, and intimidation. Together, these developments represent a troubling assault on two fundamental freedoms protected under international law: the freedom of religion and the freedom of expression.
Attacks on Orthodox Christians
International organizations have documented repeated attacks against Ethiopian Orthodox Christian communities, particularly in the Oromia Region. The World Council of Churches (WCC) reported that attacks in the East Arsi Zone resulted in the killing of Orthodox Christians, the burning and looting of churches, and the displacement of hundreds of civilians. His Holiness Patriarch Abune Mathias has repeatedly called on Ethiopian authorities to protect civilians, investigate these attacks, and hold those responsible accountable.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) have likewise reaffirmed Ethiopia's obligation to protect freedom of religion, safeguard places of worship, and ensure the security of all citizens without discrimination.
These attacks are not only assaults on individual believers but also on Ethiopia's historic Christian heritage and its long tradition of religious coexistence. Protecting religious communities and ensuring accountability for violence against them are essential to preserving peace, justice, and national unity.
The Jailing of Those Who Report the Attacks
International press freedom organizations have documented an escalating pattern of arrests, detention, and judicial harassment targeting journalists who report on conflict, human rights abuses, and religious violence.
Among the documented cases:
* Reporters Without Borders (RSF) ranks Ethiopia 148th out of 180 countries in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index , reflecting a significant deterioration in media freedom.
* The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has repeatedly condemned the detention of independent journalists and called for their immediate release.
* Journalist Salsawit Baynesagn was detained after reporting on the killings of Orthodox Christians in Arsi. CPJ reported that she was not brought before a court within the constitutionally required 48-hour period.
* Million Beyene, Managing Editor of Addis Standard, was reportedly detained shortly before Ethiopia's 2026 general election, drawing international concern.
* Independent journalist Meskerem Abera , founder and editor of Ethio Nikat Media, has been repeatedly detained in connection with her reporting and remains imprisoned following successive prosecutions that international press freedom organizations have criticized as incompatible with the protection of independent journalism. CPJ has repeatedly called for her immediate and unconditional release.
* The Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria has also expressed concern over the reported detention and harassment of Mahlet Solomon , spokesperson and assistant manager for renowned Ethiopian artist Teddy Afro, citing due process and fundamental rights concerns.
The continued detention of journalists and others who peacefully report on matters of public interest undermines transparency, weakens accountability, and deprives citizens of access to independent information. A free press is indispensable to exposing human rights abuses, protecting vulnerable communities, and strengthening democratic institutions.
International Legal Standards
Ethiopia is a State Party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and is legally obligated to protect:
* Article 18: Freedom of thought, conscience, and religion.
* Article 19: Freedom of opinion and expression.
* Article 9: Protection from arbitrary arrest and detention.
* Article 14: The right to due process and a fair trial.
These rights are also guaranteed under Ethiopia's Constitution and should be respected without exception.
Call to Action
AEPAC joins the United Nations, the Committee to Protect Journalists, Reporters Without Borders, UNESCO, the World Council of Churches, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, and other international human rights organizations in calling for:
* Immediate protection of Ethiopian Orthodox Christian communities, clergy, and places of worship.
* Independent, impartial, and transparent investigations into attacks against civilians and religious institutions, with those responsible held accountable.
* The immediate and unconditional release of journalists, writers, and all individuals arbitrarily detained for peacefully exercising their fundamental rights, including Meskerem Abera , or prompt judicial proceedings that fully comply with international due process standards.
* Full implementation of Ethiopia's obligations under international human rights law, including the protection of religious freedom, freedom of expression, due process, and the rule of law.
The attack on the Cross and the imprisonment of those who report it are not separate crises—they are two manifestations of the same erosion of fundamental rights. Lasting peace and stability in Ethiopia require the protection of religious liberty, an independent press, accountability for human rights violations, and unwavering respect for the rule of law. The international community should remain actively engaged and use all appropriate diplomatic and human rights mechanisms to help safeguard these universal principles.
