I'm off to Würzburg for the "5th European Conference on Natural Products" today. That's a great opportunity to dive into topics like synthetic biology, #naturalproducts discovery, and chemical biology. Stay tuned 🦠🌿🧫
Day 2 was packed with fascinating lectures! We learned about BGCs from ancient microbiomes, the role of symbiotic systems in novel metabolite discovery, the CluSeek tool for finding new gene clusters in GenBank, and how unused metabolomics data can be repurposed!
Today was the first day of #FYORD_Summerschool organised by @GEOMAR_de/@kielunimarine postdoctoral researchers from marine science. That's an amazing opportunity to learn more about the research projects in the area of marine biology and beyond, as well as to explore Kiel 🌊
Khalimat Murtazalieva (@emblebi) and colleagues have discovered 145 #phage anti-defence systems (ADSs) that counteract 27 of the 152 known bacterial defence families. They discuss high-throughput approaches which are indispensable for discovering new ADSs

Our first project featuring the whole team is now available as a preprint on @biorxivpreprint!
Introducing the ABC-HuMi database, a collection of BGCs encoding specialized metabolites in the human microbiome.

✨Today is a special day as @AlexKushnareva officially joins the HMSB group as a PhD student. Congratulations and best wishes for this exciting new chapter in the research journey ahead! 🧬💻
Great news for #NaturalProducts researchers! 🌿💻 @ilianolhin is working on Nerpa-MS for mining your data. The tool combines genomics and MS/MS data with chemical structures of known compounds to discover rare NRP variants. Check #ISMBECCB2023 Poster 29 on Wed or DM for details
Are you curious about the diversity of #NRPS A-domains? @AlexKushnareva will soon release ADD, a database of experimentally verified A-domains and a utility for benchmarking A-domain specificity predictors. Check out #ISMBECCB2023 Poster 197 on Wed or get in touch right here!
This month our group celebrates its first anniversary!
The event program:
✅ Start a group Twitter account
✅ Attend the world's largest bioinformatics conference @iscb#ISMBECCB2023
I repeat- I haven’t been this excited about a discovery since CRISPR. We found something enigmatic that, like CRISPR, is associated with microbial genomes. We have named these unique entities #BORGs
@randomdan1el Bioinformatics and functional genomics by Jonathan Pevsner.
It's pretty big and maybe a little bit old, but contains a lot of information for newbies + little tasks. Probably you could find it useful.
In this #MGen Method @saund_katie and @SnitkinLabWGS introduces hogwash, an open source R package that uses three methods for bacterial genome-wide association studies https://t.co/nuaVTNF3Z5
