My personal analysis of the $HOODRAT token’s pump and dump following the suspected Matt Furie account hack incident: the full timeline and my thoughts.

How the incident started:

The incident began when Matt Furie’s account followed the official HOODRAT account and started communicating through DMs.

After the conversation started, the other side provided a wallet address related to early Pepe distribution.

This caused the project team to strongly believe that it could actually be Matt Furie himself because:

The conversation pace felt natural and slow;
There was no immediate request for a large amount of tokens;
The person mentioned concerns about NFT minting.

These details further increased the team’s confidence in the authenticity.

However, the team stated that they did not send any tokens immediately.

The trigger:

On August 1, Matt Furie’s account suddenly:

Changed its profile picture to a HOODRAT-related PFP;
Posted content that appeared to be AI-generated;
Directly published the HOODRAT contract address.

This immediately triggered market FOMO.

The market cap quickly surged to around $8M+.

The rapid crash:

Soon afterward, the community began realizing that this was likely either:

A compromised account;
Or someone impersonating Matt Furie.

The reasons included:

The sudden PFP change;
AI-generated content;
Abnormal behavior after posting the contract address.

The related posts were later deleted, triggering panic selling.

The market cap quickly dropped from the peak to around $1.1M–$1.4M.

At the same time, some traders analyzed that:

Around 7–8 wallets that accumulated earlier at lower market caps coordinated selling during the crash;
Most of the top 25 holders did not significantly sell;
Some holders even increased their positions.
HOODRAT’s official response:

Afterward, the HOODRAT team released a detailed thread reviewing the entire timeline.

They admitted:

“For a moment, we genuinely believed it was him.”

But they emphasized:

The team has not changed;
The art has not changed;
The vision and atmosphere have not changed.

The lead artist also posted:

The HOODRAT team works extremely hard every day;
Most “trash coins” only survive for around 5 hours, while HOODRAT has produced nearly a year’s worth of work within one month;
They love HOODRAT and will continue pushing forward.

They stated:

One month ago, we didn’t need Matt.
Now, we don’t need Matt.

The team is treating this incident as an additional part of the project’s lore and plans to continue moving forward with NFT minting and other developments.

My personal view:

I think this incident has significantly damaged HOODRAT’s trust and contaminated the original narrative.

However, one positive factor is that the team’s response has been relatively firm and consistent.

Some people speculate that this may have been a deliberate move by the team to shake out holders.

Personally, I think that possibility is relatively low.

Regardless, I think the HOODRAT team has performed well overall.

The team has consistently released high-quality animation content, and this type of content is not something that can be produced instantly.

Additionally:

The NFT mint is free;
OpenSea also reposted related content.

These fundamentals have not changed.

In my opinion, if the team continues focusing on:

Community building;
Artistic output;
NFT development;

then HOODRAT still has a chance to recover from the damage caused by this unexpected incident
