The conversation about fuel subsidy is no longer just about economics. It is now about the daily survival of millions of Nigerians.

Atiku Abubakar has placed himself firmly on the side of relief.

The attention of "Atiku Is For The People" global movement, has on Friday, been drawn to a statement by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, claiming that the “2027 Presidential election has already been concluded”, and that “nobody can stop President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's re-election in 2027”.

That is a bloody lie, and Nigerians know it!

You do not conclude an election in a Media chat. You conclude it at Polling Units, with ballot papers, under the eyes of voters. What Wike is doing, is testing the waters for intimidation. He wants people to believe resistance is useless. It is not.

Walk through any Market in Kano, Aba, Jos, or Benin City, today, and ask one question: Can you cope? The answer is the same; no. Prices have run ahead of salaries. A bag of rice, fuel, medicine, school fees; everything has moved. The current government announced “savings” from fuel subsidy removal. Where did the money go? States get more allocations. Governors get more money. Citizens continue to get more hardship at the same time.

That is why the boast of “Tinubu till 2031”, will not stand.

Wike also said: “There is nobody in the opposition to challenge the current President.” Look around. The opposition has a face and a Plan. It is the 2027 Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

In 2023, Atiku pulled 6.9 million votes in the Presidential election. He won across the North, the Middle Belt and the South-South. He was allegedly rigged out, but he did not disappear. Since then, Atiku has been on the ground. Ward meetings. Town halls. Registration drives. He did not wait for 2027. He started in 2024.

The same numbers Wike intentionally ignores, are the ones that will bury the President Bola Tinubu Federal Government, come January 16, 2027. 93 million registered voters in 2023. President Tinubu got 8.7 million from those that came out to vote. That leaves over 84 million who did not vote for him. Add the millions who stayed at home, because they lost hope. Add first-time voters who turned 18 in the last two years and are now angry. That is the army waiting in 2027, for President Tinubu at the Polls.

Atiku will easily defeat President Tinubu, because he is offering what the people can touch, see and feel. Refineries working, so that fuel is refined here. Subsidy that follows the barrel, not briefcase Contractors. Wages that can buy food. Debt that is paid, not renamed. It is not theory. It is what he laid out in the Atiku Economic Recovery Plan, AERP 2027, and people are reading it.

The President Tinubu Federal Government’s answer is always slogans and threats: “We have done it before, and we are going to do it again.” Nigerians heard that line before. In 2015, they answered with their votes. They will answer again.

Wike can speak for himself and for the few around him; but he cannot speak for 240 million Nigerians.

The election is not concluded. The people will conclude it; and when the votes are counted in 2027, Atiku will defeat President Tinubu.

A little explanation: Unlike in #Nigeria, where President Bola Tinubu (@officialABAT) can seemingly order the arrest of an individual, in the United States, we have rules and processes that prevent President @realDonaldTrump from having such powers. The @FBI, as a federal agency, must abide by the process, especially since there is an active lawsuit to gain access to the @TheJusticeDept records. If President Bola Tinubu was indeed a #heroin trafficker who "ratted" on his co-traffickers and became an informant, the FBI has a duty to protect him, especially if #Tinubu claims to the FBI that the release of these documents would endanger his life.

Apart from all that, the public must pay close attention to the details. Unlike the @JoeBiden DOJ, which did everything to avoid even admitting that criminal records exist concerning President Tinubu, the #Trump DOJ has made it very clear that such records exist and that they are highly sensitive. The #FBI essentially threw Tinubu under the bus with this statement while still working to keep damaging information about Tinubu private. The #Trump DOJ will follow the law and obey the process, but through its actions and statements, it has made it clear that it will focus on U.S. interests but has no desire to support President Bola #Tinubu's claim that he was not part of a heroin-trafficking criminal organization.

Atiku is simply saying that we miserably failed the subsidy removal class with life threatening consequences for all of us and the nation. And that's a fact.

Therefore we need to pause and go back and repeat that class. This time under a qualified and competent teacher. Not under the kind of olodo teachers that @elrufai sacked in Kaduna state.

First, I want to thank Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for his courage in broaching an issue that many Nigerians taught was already a slam dunk, even though it is killing Nigerians, the nation and our economy, and for daring to be different in presenting common sense alternative ideas which belie Mr President’s premature and arrogant proclamation that Atiku is ignorant in governance.

I said we would have that all important conversation. This is the start of it.

Thankfully, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has kick-started the conversation by following up his proposition (in less than 24 hours) with a model of how he will handle fuel subsidy as President - differently, efficiently, effectively and productively.

It is only fair that I kickstart the conversation by presenting his alternative model to Nigerians for assessment beyond sentiments.

Atiku (ADC) in his proposed Petroleum Subsidy Reform (PSF), declared that his administration would replace Nigeria’s old import-subsidy architecture with a targeted, capped, transparently budgeted and independently audited production subsidy designed to lower energy costs while accelerating domestic refining.

The Atiku Economic Recovery Plan (AERP) 2027 recognises that the choice before Nigeria is not simply between subsidy and no subsidy, but between an opaque intervention that breeds waste and a disciplined economic instrument that delivers measurable benefits to citizens.

I will present key quotes from the AERP model in a simplified manner. It will form the basis of further and deeper conversations.

“Our objective is not permanent subsidy. It is to use temporary and disciplined support to build a refining industry strong enough eventually not to need subsidy.

Earlier, I visited the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), alongside Hon. Update: We have now been informed that @uscourts Judge Howell this morning granted the @FBI permission to provide the court with the documents in private and has given the @FBI, @DEAHQ, @TheJusticeDept, and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu (@officialABAT) until August 28, 2026 (“and no later”), to file their opposition to the release of Tinubu's alleged drug-trafficking records. I stress the judge’s “no later” comment because the court has reached its limit and is making it clear that the FBI must now convince the court why the documents are too sensitive to be released.

Unlike the @JoeBiden @TheJusticeDept (DOJ), where the DOJ and FBI blocked, stonewalled, and refused to admit they had any sensitive drug-trafficking-related documents on President #Tinubu, the DOJ and FBI under President @realDonaldTrump are moving fast and being transparent as they move through the process. The #FBI has now admitted that it has highly sensitive drug-trafficking-related information about President #Tinubu. By admitting this, we now know Tinubu's claim that the case was simply about civil forfeiture is untrue. The FBI does not deem civil cases highly sensitive and seeks to present the evidence to the judge in private. This is usually done in high-level drug cases where the goal is to protect the agency's dealings with the criminal informant. This ties into the allegation that President #Tinubu ratted out his alleged co-drug traffickers in exchange for immunity from prosecution.

The #FBI admitting in court that it has sensitive information on President #Tinubu and requiring the court to review the documents privately before any court order ordering their release is given aligns with what our friend in the Trump Administration has told us: We will follow the law, but we do not protect drug traffickers. The FBI is following standard procedures for protecting informants, but is also openly communicating that President #Tinubu's claim of innocence is far from the truth. We thank President Trump and the White House senior staff for moving this case forward after three years of stalling and for being fully transparent, unlike the Biden DOJ, which did not acknowledge it had sensitive information on Tinubu.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu (@officialABAT) was employed as Treasurer of Mobil Oil Nigeria Ltd. when, according to @TheJusticeDept @FBI @DEAHq records, he was alleged to have been connected to a criminal organization involved in smuggling heroin from #Nigeria into the United States.

Mobil later became part of the corporate lineage of what is today @exxonmobil. Funds associated with Tinubu were seized as proceeds of drug trafficking by the DOJ, but strangely, Tinubu was allowed to leave the United States without being criminally charged.

As Nigeria's President, #Tinubu’s government has maintained significant relations with ExxonMobil, including direct engagement with the company and major policy, regulatory, and investment decisions affecting its Nigerian operations. Reports show that ExxonMobil has benefited tremendously under President Tinubu through major state reforms:

The Fuel Subsidy Removal: The elimination of the multi-trillion-naira fuel subsidy freed up national revenues that allowed Nigeria to pay its obligations and joint-venture cash calls to major international oil operators like ExxonMobil.

The $1.28 Billion Seplat Approval: President #Tinubu's administration broke a long-standing regulatory deadlock by officially greenlighting ExxonMobil’s asset divestment to Seplat Energy, clearing the firm's capital path out of older shallow-water assets.

Deepwater Tax Breaks: President #Tinubu introduced massive tax credits—up to $11.50 per barrel—enabling ExxonMobil to shift its full operational weight toward more profitable, export-heavy offshore projects.

Production Pledges: Following direct meetings with the presidency, ExxonMobil has reinvested in local operations to bring an additional 40,000 barrels per day (bpd) into the Nigerian crude stream.
