We do not have this simple luxury of opening a window for fresh air. Why? Because we are unfortunate enough to live near wood heaters smoking out the neighbourhood. This is both health and mental health issue @LilyDAmbrosioMP @DELWP_Vic @EPA_Victoria
🚨📉 #CleanAirNews | Population-weighted total annual mean PM2.5 (and other #AirPollution data) has been released for 2023 i.e. average for everyone not best and/or worst:
England 6.97 ug.m3 vs 7.79 ug/m3 in 2022 i.e. down 10.5%
Wales 5.33 ug/m3 vs 6.74 ug/m3 in 2022 i.e. down 20.9%
Scotland 4.08 ug/m3 vs 4.57 ug/m3 in 2022 i.e. down 10.7%
North Ireland 4.36 ug/m3 vs 5.16 ug/m3 in 2022 i.e. down 15.5%
@WHO #AirQualityGuideline = 5 ug/m3 everywhere

<< We’re winning but need to #BanWoodBurning, reduce #RedMeat eating and more to achieve @WHO #AirQualityGuidelines and everywhere! cc @DrMariaNeira
“A plan by the British government to burn biomass imported from countries including North Korea and Afghanistan has been described as ‘bonkers,’ with critics saying it undermines the credibility of the UK’s climate strategy.”

Excellent resource. Local authority advice to “talk to your neighbours” is discriminatory on the grounds of disability. It may not be possible for the most vulnerable to do this. The right to clean air in our own home should not depend on our ability to negotiate with neighbours.
@Steve_Dimo, here’s some advice I got about approaching a #woodburning neighbour:
“Whatever you do, don’t mention that you’re a doctor.
He’ll just start burning twice as much…”
That’s what we’re up against
- while @DEECA_Vic, @VicGovEPA & @tanya_plibersek sit on their hands.
@tanya_plibersek, you’re totally missing in action here - the only activity we know of from your department is some rehashing of industry friendly wood heater “standards” - allowing the continued sale of hazardous woodburners.

New story on our website: “I am an elderly person who has suffered from wretched chimney smoke for over 10 years now… …It’s like living in some kind of hell…” #WoodSmokeStories#WoodSmokePollution https://t.co/Qj3dntrmuX
There is also a blanket of smoke over Melbourne tonight. Only 5-10% of households using wood heaters but emitting 51% of the air pollution pm2.5 - harming everyone’s health. @Steve_Dimo@JacintaAllanMP
When will our leaders do something about air pollution? It wrecks people’s health.
The air in Melbourne is very unhealthy when the air is still and people use their wood heaters.

I often have to tell my kids (who have asthma) when outside our home ‘don’t breathe in’, ‘hold your breath’ because of smoke from nearby wood heaters. The ‘burn better’ policy is allowing wood smoke to harm children’s health @Steve_Dimo@JacintaAllanMP@MaryAnneThomas
A new study from @BristolUni shows that exposure to #AirPollution while in the womb is associated with the development of mental health problems in adolescence.
"Interventions to reduce exposure...could potentially improve mental health."
