This new research estimates the price and benefits of recovering threatened species – and offers cost-effective ways for environment groups, farmers, governments and others to make a difference. @april_reside@cyclonewatson@CSIRO@UQ_News https://t.co/VgxHmBXNTR
New research estimates the cost of recovering Australia’s threatened species to be a whopping AU$583B per year for at least 30 years.
While the figure isn’t proposed as a realistic budget for biodiversity conservation, it highlights the sheer scale of work to be done.

The best part of my job is working with fantastic, dedicated people who are doing great things for conservation. Honours student Emilee Thomson wrote this great blog about her research.
Enjoy! 🦎 ❤️

This local habitat is under immediate threat from development. It is one of the few places in the greater Brisbane area that contains the iconic Frill-necked Lizard! The endangered Collared Delma (Delma torquata) is also suspected to be here. Petition:

What can inner city residents do to repair our environment - Q from @PressClubAust - urban spaces are disproportionately important for biodiversity & threatened species; keeping this biodiversity in cities increases people's exposure to nature.
So important and needs care!
Prof @martine_maron speaking @PressClubAust "We need to stop taking nature for granted"; and that money currently flowing towards the environment equivalent to throwing a cup of water on a raging fire

@MattHHolden@AcademicChatter@hormiga@DynamicEcology@McMadLab@UQ_News @UQ_CBCS @HugePossum Wowee that is a very thoughtful response, good on you. I actually counted how many potential students have contacted me so far this year - 49! A lot my replies to potential students are about the logistics & realities of applying through UQ, any chance you drafted that too?? 🙏
@april_reside 100%! For those interested, global evidence also proves this point that small remaining patches of bush are often more valuable for biodiversity conservation:

Inspirational; but also a sad truth - we all need to work to save the remaining patches of vegetation around us.
Left to the powers-that-be, it would be whittled away, 'offset' etc until very little is left.

This morning I lay witness to perhaps 20% of the entire Swift Parrot population.
Thrill and despair in the same scene. To think they could be extinct within a decade.
We need to do more. Their value is greater than that of harvested timber.
Well imagine if we actually listened to the experts ... who predicted this was going to happen ...
When will we start taking environmental protection seriously, and start avoiding harm?
