Since today is the first day of Autumn, here is the Autumn Darter (Etheostoma autumnale). This species of fish is endemic to the upper White River drainage in Arkansas and Missouri, where it can be found in small headwater creeks in a variety of habitats.

I spent the day with undergraduates sampling creeks in central Maryland, discovering several Greenside Darters (Etheostoma blennioides), an introduced species in the Potomac River Watershed. This underscores the need to avoid transporting wildlife across state borders
