Measuring Scholarly Impact: From Flawed Metrics to a More Valid Measure NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE!

1️⃣ Why journal lists fail us. Treating “where you publish” as “how impactful you are” confuses journal prestige with article impact and distorts incentives (think A-list chasing). These proxies ignore article-level variability and time, rewarding venue over verified influence.
2️⃣Raw citations (and the h-index) aren’t enough. Citation counts vary wildly by field, database, and time, can be dominated by “one-hit wonders,” and don’t reveal whether citations are positive or critical. A timeless, de-contextualized h-index bakes in structural advantages and masks accurate performance trajectories.
3️⃣Impact must be contextualized and time-bound. Our @AOMConnect Perspectives article argues for “performance in situ”: Evaluate impact within the management domain and within explicit date ranges to enable fair peer comparisons. That means combining quantity + quality and anchoring them to the field’s norms and period under review.
4️⃣Meet CSII v. 2.00: A transparent, free tool you can use today. The Contextualized Scholarly Impact Index (CSII) computes a field- and time-sensitive h-index using 360 first-quartile SCImago management journals (623,738 articles) and Scopus author IDs (695,269 authors), for individuals, groups, and entire schools—over any date window. It’s free to use (no subscription needed), so deans, committees, funders, and scholars can benchmark impact on a level playing field.
5️⃣Turn better measurement into better policy. CSII supports evidence-based decisions for funding, RPT, awards, doctoral training, succession planning, and editor selection—without outsourcing judgment to narrow journal lists. Use it as a core input (not the only arbiter) in a pluralistic, transparent system that rewards real, sustained impact.

Researchers in #business, #psychology, #education, #sociology, and many other fields are interested in testing hypotheses about# categorical #moderators (e.g., industry, location, ethnicity, sex) using moderated #multipleregression (i.e., MMR). However, hypothesized moderators are often NOT found. Why? Because sample sizes, measurement error, and range restriction (i.e., the sample’s variance is smaller than the population’s) result in insufficient statistical power. HERE IS A SOLUTION!! The online program MMRPOWER estimates statistical power using a theory-based approximation based on our Organizational Research Methods article (the program is at https://t.co/BvIWPOYmMx). It can be used for moderators with between two and 10 levels (e.g., subgroups), and you can also specify predictor and criterion reliabilities and predictor range restriction (i.e., truncation) for each subgroup, making MMRPOWER the most comprehensive power estimator. You can use this program to design studies that have sufficient power to detect existing moderating effects. Also, by entering values reported in published research, the program allows you to learn whether those studies, especially the ones that did not find a hypothesized moderator, have been conducted with insufficient statistical power—and this may be the reason for the lack of support for a moderating effect hypothesis.
