January 16, 2024, over 200 houses were burned and 10 people killed in #Kolu & #Memre Kebeles, #Dera Woreda, #NorthShoa Zone #Oromo Region, #Ethiopia. The assault on civilians started approximately around 6 AM and continued until 10 AM in the morning.

Note on Dera district: Over 90% of the district’s population are ethnic Amharas, the district was delineated under the Amhara Region in the early nineties when the Ethnic Federalism administrative system was imposed on Ethiopia. However, it has been moved to the Oromo region citing ‘administrative convenience’, the residents of the district have been subject to repeated acts of discrimination, profiling, targeting, looting, burning of properties, kidnapping, torture, and murder by many state and non-state actors ever since.
