@ESYudkowsky I have no objection to the rest of the claims made here, but I just looked into the specific anecdote about British diplomatic politeness about defending Poland, and this appears to be straight up false (assuming this the correct transcript) https://t.co/G8DciQbAH4
@wolftivy General idea being to figure out worthwhile goals without prematurely constraining the question with the practicality of getting there/what the current level of public concern over the problem would enable
@wolftivy Idea: wargaming out possibilities that would actually reverse the decline under the assumptions of varying degrees of political hard & soft power (i.e. "if I had the power to make 2/3/5 social/legal changes to fix the birthrates, this set would have the highest ROI")
@drethelin A big open problem with this is how to get them to do the things they're told to do without a financial incentive to go along with it the moment there's any effort involved/shiny effect fades
Any ideas?
@ESYudkowsky Ah, I guess if your exercise tolerance tops out before it offsets enough calories then it's probably a dead end, unless a hyperbaric oxygen protocol could be added to offset general fatigue?
@ESYudkowsky If unclear, the logic of the first one is that it's unpleasant and extreme and very time consuming, but maybe eating 3000kcal/day and burning 3200 might degrade cognitive performance less than eating 700 and burning 1500
@ESYudkowsky 2 possibilities that I discussed in a private Discord last year that don't seem to be on the list of failed experiments yet:
1. 20-30 hours/week of moderate intensity aerobic exercise, not just aerobic exercise
2. Eating semi-normally and getting liposuction every 6-12 months
@LFG_Leeds Probably pattern-matched to someone trying to remove a free Palestine tag, because it didn't occur to him that a volunteer would be cleaning graffiti for any other reason
@CartoonsHateHer Since you asked for feedback:
Like many people, I find you kinda insufferable on the whole, but I have a begrudging respect for your outfit choices.
@benlandautaylor Only group that is big enough to do so + has enough of their shit together + doesn't lose their most effective organisers to individual incentives (i.e. The best people at organising a poor people welfare voting bloc could do much better by getting a job themselves)
@dynomight7 I think the answer is something like there's very few people in the center of a 3 way Venn between "has the drive/lust to imagine it" has the technical knowledge to make the details not obviously wrong" and "is part of a culture where this is seen as good/not a waste of time"
@drethelin For the record: I think they're mostly not even trying, and that this pool of stranded permissionless capital can be unlocked with the right piece of social technology.
@RichardMCNgo@davidad@HiFromMichaelV@gnomicperfect My working theory is that some people find the act of explaining their ideas to be an integral part of developing them, but for others it feels more like an unnecessary chore.
If this holds, it would make sense if most of those people happen to fall in the latter camp.
