This week we welcomed @BBCScotlandNews into @UofGlasgow’s @CVRinfo laboratory to see how our researchers are working with live #SARS_CoV_2 samples to help fight #COVID19 & trace the different strains in Scotland. Including the recent cluster in Dumfries and Galloway.
My comment "we're not going .. to eradicate this virus" had a context: "in several years it will become a normal virus. So if anything we’re accommodating to it, our immune system if we’re infected will .. give .. protection, we’ll use vaccines to mimic normal immunity" #SARSCoV2
A study in Nature reports 2 infected dogs out of 15 households with confirmed cases of #COVID19. Genetic sequences of the viruses from the dogs were identical to the virus detected in the human cases, suggesting human-to-animal transmission of SARS-CoV-2. https://t.co/xXhfpsxUHy
We made it! The first batch of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine that is being used in the clinical trials here in Oxford was manufactured by my marvellous team at the CBF. We take no credit for the conception or the design, but we will take credit for having gone from DNA construct to...
I will update the figure every day using the latest daily hospital announcements. And there will be weekly shifts up or down according to the new official excess deaths numbers.
Today, there will be new numbers for Scotland
This official data will provide a check
Without vaccines or antivirals, social distancing measures are crucial to reduce height and delay #COVID19 epidemic peak.
'Individual behaviour will be crucial... early self-isolation, seeking medical advice remotely unless symptoms are severe & social distancing are key.' 1/2
I’m pleased to present a preprint of our latest work on phage counter-defense strategies – inhibiting host cell quorum sensing. We believe this provides phages with a mechanism to broadly silence a variety of bacterial anti-phage defenses.

Please RT: The Third Glasgow #BioInformatics Summer School will take place 24-28 of August 2020: https://t.co/VK7CmX6vVd We cover #NGSS, #linux, #R, mapping, #RNA-seq, scRNA-Seq and a lot more. Very good feedback last year!

Our study investigated whether phage therapy is safe in treating severe Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia. We administered phage therapy intravenously to 13 patients with severe Staphylococcus aureus infections (adjunctive to antibiotics) https://t.co/RLIRrAy23y
7 pangolin sarbecovirus genomes uploaded to GISAID by Wu-Chun Cao, Tommy Lam, Na Jia, Ya-Wei Zhang, Jia-Fu Jiang & Bao-Gui Jiang (Beijing Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology), 1 close to virus P1L from Liu et al. None of these closer to #SARSCoV2 than the bat virus RaTG13.
UK government has declared #2019nCoV#coronavirus a ‘serious and imminent threat’ to public health. Under the measure, persons can be forcibly quarantined for public safety. https://t.co/q2cwv550si
Here's an interactive illustration that gives you different perspectives on the network that delivers #coronaravirus to other places in the world. The page takes some loading time, also make sure to use your mouse to change perspective: https://t.co/DD4F9HfsuP
"We should be optimistic that nCoV-2019 outbreak will be overcome soon but only support of more research into emerging infections will mean that outbreaks like these are no longer threats to humanity." https://t.co/TNUbHALKUH @QUBelfast@WWIEM_QUB
New podcast episode! When NOT to use #statistics...
If you don't know what it's for, you also won't know when it's not for you.
