Till date UHI has been primarily focused on local heating impacts. This study by my colleague @TC_Chakraborty shows impact of urbanization on regional heating patterns. It demostrates that 'decarbonisation' and staying below 1.5C needs to consider 'urbanization' as a metric.
We need to have a conversatation around #heat#mitigation and #adaptation instead of changing the voting season and voting choices !!

Over the 12-month period, 6.3 billion people (about 78% of the global population) experienced at least 31 days of extreme heat. This was made at least 2x more likely due to human-caused #ClimateChange
This is HUGE: @Google, @Microsoft, @Meta and @Salesforce (biggest players in AI) announce today the Symbiosis Coalition, with a commitment to contract 20M tons of high-quality nature-based carbon removal credits by 2030 (which should surpass a $1B!). More companies are expected to join next.
I'm proud that @PachamaInc made a small contribution by sparking conversations and providing technical input and expertise to support the commitment to quality by the coalition.
This is amazing news for the planet and hopefully just the beginning of something much larger. ๐

Huge props to @KateEBrandt , @SuzanneDiBianca , @MelNakagawa, @BlairSwedeen , @Julia_io_Strong and the entire ecosystem that made this happen. Now, time to get ready to grow!! ๐ณ
Whole of Asia is reeling under a heat wave, threatening lives & livelihoods. Both #climate adaptation & mitigation are urgently needed, especially to protect the most vulnerable in each country. @MoHFW_INDIA@moefcc@NITIAayog@UNFCCC@WHOSEARO@WHOWPRO
Great summary of our paper by BBC "By planting trees strategically in the areas where they are most needed, an additional 460 heat-related deaths and 81,000 heat-related illnesses could be averted, and another 4.3 terawatt hours of electricity could be saved each year"
Our latest paper shows that 30,000 more lives are impacted across POC neighborhoods than white neighborhoods. Market mechanism will be key to meet the need of planting 1.2 billion additional trees and ensure permanence #cobenefits#people#beyond#carbon#co2e
This is great. FYI, in France where I live, by law ALL parking lots above a certain size have to cover them with solar PV. Would be great to see CA do this as well.
"We thought these lakes were going to be sinks of carbon, at least during the summer," says an Arctic researcher. โBut what we saw this year was just unprecedented.โ
Arctic lakes that once locked up carbon could be turning into sources of emissions.

#ClimateWeekNYC is underway โ the event that brings together global leaders in climate action from business, government & the climate community, in conjunction with #UNGA & the City of NY.
This week is about turning commitments into action. Letโs get to work!
