If you work in science long enough, you start noticing something strange. No matter the technology, the same arguments appear again and again.

GMOs, vaccines, nuclear energy, pesticides:
Different technology.
Same script.

It starts with a claim that sounds careful:
“There have been no long-term studies.”

Except there have.
Decades of them.

Vaccines have been studied since the 1940s.

Nuclear power has more than 60 years of operational data.

Modern pesticides go through a decade of testing before approval.

GM crops have been assessed by over 70 countries and thousands of independent researchers.

The studies exist.
They’re public.

And they consistently converge on the same point: when regulated properly, these technologies are safe and beneficial.

Then comes the next line:
“We just need more testing.”

But the people saying this rarely know the tests that already exist.

“We need more testing” often means “I don’t trust the testing we already did.”

When evidence doesn’t work, the conversation shifts to emotion.

“DNA changes.”
“Frankenfood."
“Chemicals.”

These aren’t scientific concepts - they’re placeholders for unease.

Fear fills the space left by unfamiliarity.

Every field has its version of the same accusation: “Studies show harm.”

Look closely and it’s always the same pattern:

A handful of flawed or retracted studies amplified online, while thousands of rigorous, independent assessments are quietly ignored.

Whether it’s GMOs, mRNA vaccines, nuclear energy, or plant protection products, the outliers get attention because fear spreads faster than evidence.

And when all else fails, the final refuge appears:
“The experts are lying”

As if millions of scientists, farmers, engineers, doctors, and regulators across dozens of countries secretly coordinate a global conspiracy.

The reality is far less dramatic: stringent regulation, transparent data, international oversight, and professional cultures built on safety.

The script never changes.
Only the object of fear does.

The irony is that these technologies - so often framed as threats - are the very tools that have made life safer, longer, and more resilient.

Vaccines prevented pandemics before they started.

Nuclear power helped countries decarbonize faster than any other energy source.

GM crops reduced pesticide use and protected harvests during droughts.

Modern plant protection products kept food affordable and yields stable.

Different tools.
Different fields.
One story.

A story where fear tries to slow progress, and evidence quietly keeps the world running.

GLOBAL WARMING: The first comprehensive tide-gauge study proves there’s been no acceleration in global sea level rise since the 19th century. Global cereal production has grown much faster than population in the last half-century—

The world's population has more than doubled over the last 60 years, but global food production has managed to keep up.

The chart shows the change in four indicators since 1961: cereal production, cereal yields, land use for cereals, and population. Each metric is expressed in its relative change since 1961 (which is given a value of zero).

Cereal production has increased by 3.5-fold, more than the 2.6-fold growth in population. That means production has grown faster than the population, and the world produces more cereal per person than 60 years ago.

We can also see what has driven this increase. You can grow more food by either increasing crop yields or using more land. While land use has increased, most of this growth has come from higher crop yields. This has spared some natural habitats from being converted into farmland.
