A Son’s Plea at Lord’s: Save Imran Khan

Pakistan’s reported threat to boycott the Lord’s Test may have created the very outcome it sought to avoid: a Sky Sports lunch-break interview has become a fast-moving global humanitarian story, capable of reaching tens of millions across television, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and WhatsApp.
This was never only cricket. Michael Atherton was interviewing Suleiman and Kasim Khan, the British-Pakistani sons of Imran Khan: Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup-winning captain, philanthropist, former prime minister—and a father whom the Pakistan Supreme Court and the UN Special Rapporteur on torture have said has been held in solitary confinement as his health deteriorates. Imran Khan’s social-media accounts have more than 20 million followers; add cricket’s global audience and Pakistan’s worldwide diaspora, and the potential reach of the brothers’ Sky interview is immense.
Kasim’s fear that his father could be killed in prison gave the interview its terrible human urgency. These were not politicians speaking from a podium. They were sons appealing for their father’s safety, medical care and the right simply to see him.

Their mother and filmmaker, Jemima Goldsmith, has now made that appeal directly to Britain’s new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, and Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband. In a viral X post, she asked: “How much longer will Britain remain silent?” She alleged that Imran Khan has endured three years of solitary confinement, with family contact severely restricted, and said that Pakistan’s Supreme Court orders on treatment, family visits and calls with his sons were being defied.
Her brother, Lord Zac Goldsmith, has pressed for urgent British diplomatic intervention. The family’s message is crossing borders because their bonds do: sons in Britain, a mother using her public voice, an uncle appealing to the Foreign Office, and the Pakistani diaspora amplifying every word.

Pakistan’s government disputes allegations of inadequate medical, legal and family access. Yet the question remains: why, according to Khan’s family and supporters, has the Supreme Court’s direction to transfer him to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad not been carried out? That question requires a clear and credible answer.

The Pakistan Cricket Board’s reported boycott threat did not bury this story. It made the world ask: what did Imran Khan’s sons say that made a Test match at Lord’s appear to be at risk?
In the social-media age, attempts to silence a just humanitarian appeal can have the exact opposite effect. A transnational family’s plea may yet mobilise the international attention needed to protect one of cricket’s greatest champions.
