@ShaveEmily I 100% agree! As more and more Canadian artists get famous there will be a new market geared towards them ending the American domination of the music industry #POPMUSW22
@JennaleeRalph I do agree with your statement but I do still think there is benefits to promoting certain music such as Canadian music in Canada to help support upcoming local musicians! This can be contrasted to supporting local businesses compared to big corporations #POPMUSW22
I do believe promoting Canadian artists is beneficial and necessary to an extent as we still need to be adhering towards our own culture of music. Supporting upcoming Canadian artists will ensure that local musicians will thrive. #POPMUSW22
@Monicak40659510 @dchicasduena Agreed. I suppose some of the younger generation would prefer the computer generated sounds as oppose to traditional instruments as well! Electronic instruments are becoming more popular. #POPMUSW22
@PardyAbigail Agreed! Live performances enhance the musical experience. There's something absolutely entrancing about live instruments being played as oppose to listening to songs through a speaker. You can really FEEL the music in live performances! #POPMUSW22
I can see the truth behind Wald's statement. I suppose a lot of people may enjoy the convenience and studio perfection of recorded songs. I however do know many people (such as myself) who would prefer a live performance. Live performances are more than just the music. #POPMUSW22
@OliviaR34156685 Agreed! we must acknowledge this past in a historical context and shouldn't be contributing to the artists who stole the original creators already good music. #POPMUSW22
@YarnCurator Agreed, this comment really sums up the injustice that schlock committed in the music industry. Taking away a genres cultural roots to exploit it for money is cultural theft. #popmusw22
I do believe cultural theft was taking place through "schlock rock." It had shifted the original cultural significance that rock and roll had with the African-American music community into something that can be commercialized and marketed which is unjust. #POPMUSW22
@josie16t I agree! That is an interesting perspective on his vocal technique. Ray Charles' definitely lived a trouble life so a conscious or even subconscious usage of his music as a way to cry out for help makes a lot of sense! #POPMUSW22
@ACJ78028692 This is an important note Ashley! Different emotional elements added to vocals keeps music dynamic and intimate. It definitely highlights particular parts of the song! #popmusw22
I believe Ray Charles' unique breaking voice adds character to his music by embedding his personal experiences into his work. Charles had a hard and troubled life and I believe his breaking voice is a way of putting his life experiences into every piece of music. #POPMUSW22
@etiguin @Zoeycross1 I remember having a cassette player in my car and thinking mp3 players were super fancy. We have come a long way and yet I think the "classy" style of older listening technology such as cassette recorders and record players still hold more charm than some of the newer technology.
@scdrover I also find it so interesting that the way people listen to music is even associated with class at all. What's also interesting is it isn't always the newer "fancier" technology that is being praised as a new wave of vinyl records has come about.
I think today's listening devices really influences how others perceive each other especially when it comes to social class. Listening devices such as Air Pods have become a symbol of wealth and high class. They've become so influential that they are now the standard. #POPMUSW22
@ACJ78028692 I 100% agree that media industries do perpetuate higher beauty standards in society. I do think there are some pop stars who are trying to change that especially through their music like Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass."
@MA20220106 This is a very fair point and can be seen with many other pop songs. I think pop songs also give listeners a sense of entitlement to receiving love and affection from others which can be problematic.
I agree that pop music may appeal to a more passive audience as it is easy music to listen to and its main appeal seems to be its catchiness. Many pop songs sound the same so their familiarity may make us less likely to think of them critically. #POPMUSW22
I think generally the "false needs" perpetuated by popular music tend to be overly materialistic needs such as a need to be rich or to have a perfect love life. This is a great reflection of the genre as many see it as a representation of capitalism. #POPMUSW22
