An Air Conditioner which cuts energy consumption by 50-60% can be an absolute gamechanger for India. This is what startups should hope and aim to do. Not merely fulfilling an unmet need, but also being environmentally and socially responsible.

While consuming media, I often wonder that if a person can't see themselves or their representation in the mainstream, how much does that limit their expectation of themselves?
I just came across a phenomenon called the Bechdel test which is an empirical method which measures the active presence of women in films. It has various limitations but it seems like a good starting point to see what percentage of roles given to women are active.
To pass all three tests under this phenomenon, a film must contain at least two female characters whose names we know, it must have two female characters who talk to each other about any topic that is unrelated to the male characters in the film. All these are very basic tests which we automatically assume that every modern film passes.
That, however, is not the case.
According to a 2021 study of 100 blockbusters, 86% of female director’s movies passed the test, compared to an abysmal 10% for male directors. Similarly, a database of 9,802 movies shows that just 57% pass all three tests and 11% pass none of the tests.
A study by IBM Research India which looked at gender representation of people in Hindi films found that over a 51 year period, male cast members were mentioned on average 50 times in the film's plot description on Wikipedia, compared to females who are mentioned only 15 times.
Not only have women been given passive roles in films, but their roles have also been minimised to a large extent. I think about women across the world who are consuming films. I pose a question to myself - how must they feel watching these films which either explicitly or implicitly shows their role as the passive other. What must it do to their expectations about themselves in real life?
