"I Am Africa. Africa Is My Responsibility."

As the curtain fell on the Africa Mindset Reset Forum 2026 in Kigali, Rwanda, our Founder and Executive Director, @WakoliCaren, was invited to deliver the closing poem, a powerful reflection that captured the heart of the conversations that had unfolded over two days.

Her message was simple, yet profound:

"We will not get the Africa we merely wish for. We will get the Africa we work for. We will get the Africa we are willing to sacrifice for."

From leadership and service, to African agency, identity, innovation, mentorship, and purpose, the poem challenged each of us to reject spectatorship and embrace responsibility.

It reminded us that:
✅ Africa's future will be built by Africans.
✅ Leadership is about service, not status.
✅ Young people do not need to wait for permission to lead.
✅ We must tell our own stories and shape our own narrative.
✅ The mindset reset begins with each one of us.

As an organization committed to raising values-driven leaders across Africa, this message resonates deeply with our mission and our belief that sustainable transformation begins within individuals before it is reflected in institutions and societies.

And perhaps the most powerful line of all:

"I am Africa. Africa is my responsibility."

May we all leave inspired not only to imagine a better Africa, but to build it.

Sixteen years ago, Kenya gave birth to a new CONSTITUTIONAL PROMISE. I remember the difficult journey through Bomas, Kilifi and Naivasha, the arguments, hopes, frustrations and, tragically, the bloodshed that helped midwife the Constitution of 2010. I have lived through all its sixteen years. My verdict is one of UNFINISHED TRANSFORMATION. We have seen important changes: devolution has brought power closer to the people; ours is a more open society; the judiciary has demonstrated greater independence; and the Bill of Rights has given citizens a language with which to challenge the mighty.

Yet much remains painfully incomplete: healthcare, education, social protection and economic justice; police brutality, violations of the Bill of Rights, impunity, corruption and inequality.

Kenya remains a project in progress. We have achieved something, but not enough. The Constitution gave us the compass; the unfinished question is whether we possess the political courage to follow it. The idea of a country's economy plan being drawn by professors behind closed doors is really a continuation of the games we've seen since Sessional Paper no 10 of 1965. Manufacturing consent by telling us that we need to shut up while the government implements plans like holy scriptures. Similar to Jean-Marie Adiaffi's novel famously titled "Shut up, we're developing."

The media cannot adequately address that problem because they think history and political philosophy are irrelevant to the market. So the fact that they're fighting it out with professors on our screens is neither here nor there. They're all together as the elite manufacturing consent, just with sibling rivalry between the first and forth estates.

They played this game with CBC, pretending they were discussing the document when really, they were performing this dance of rigorous, meritocratic change. It's always been like this. Since 1965.

As the African Youth Charter marks 20 years, the need to operationalise the African Youth Fund has never been more urgent. Delivering on Africa's commitments to young people requires robust, predictable, and sustainable financing to address the persistent funding gaps that continue to undermine youth development across the continent.
