There's also the huge caveat that no "profit" is realized in the stock market until you sell it.

@kelseyhightower @AllenSwackhamer Stock transactions/capital gains doesn't show up in GDP. In the macro sense those are asset transfers and not a true "purchase". Companies contribution to GDP is their revenue generated from any goods/service they provide within that country.
