Tune in to BBC One tomorrow at 10am to see how we’re helping protect one of the UK’s most loved species. 🦔
UK hedgehog numbers have declined by up to 75% since 2000 – largely due to habitat loss and fragmentation.
Our scientist Kate Scott-Gatty spoke with the BBC’s @helen_drew about her team’s work monitoring London’s hedgehog populations.
Kate manages the @LondonHogWatch programme, which has spent the last 10 years working to understand where hedgehogs are surviving in the capital – and what we can do to help them.

We are proud to share that Dr Becki Lawson, wildlife vet and researcher at our Institute of Zoology, @ZSLScience , has been awarded an MBE for her services to Wildlife Health! 🐸🐦⬛🩺
This honour recognises 25 years of work dedicated to understanding diseases that affect wildlife and their impacts in the UK and beyond.
🦭 After completing her studies in MSc Wild Animal Health with ZSL and the @RoyalVetCollege , Becki joined us in 2002, working with CSIP colleagues to investigate an outbreak of seal distemper. She has since gone on to work with a variety of species - from Critically Endangered Caribbean frogs threatened by a deadly fungus, to researching the health of otters, birds and bats in the UK.
🐦 Since 2013, Becki has focused on monitoring and protecting British garden birds, amphibians, reptiles and hedgehogs on a national scale through her work in the Garden @wildlife_health (GWH) project.
🦔 A collaboration between ZSL, @_BTO , @froglifers and RSPB @Natures_Voice , GWH combines scientific expertise with the power of citizen science to detect and respond to wildlife health threats. Over the last 13 years, Becki and the GWH team have used reports from members of the public to build a national database of wildlife disease, informed government policy and helped nature-lovers safeguard the health and welfare of wildlife in their gardens.
We’re delighted to see Becki’s outstanding commitment to wildlife health be recognised as part of HM The King’s Birthday Honours list.
HM King Charles serves as our Royal Patron, continuing a 200-year tradition of the reigning British Monarch being our Royal Patron.
Congratulations Becki for this remarkable achievement! 👏
⏰ “This outbreak can still be brought under control, but the window for action is narrowing.”
One month after the Ebola disease outbreak was declared in DRC, major gaps in surveillance, diagnosis, contact tracing and community engagement persist.

Some false claims on here about Dartmoor Ponies. @NaturalEngland is committed to the long-term future of Dartmoor ponies and is working in partnership with commoners, landowners, and organisations such as the Dartmoor Hill Pony Association to achieve that.

🚨 Hazardous flame retardant chemicals are contaminating England’s rivers.
New analysis by The Rivers Trust & Wildlife and Countryside Link found these chemicals in most rivers tested, and at unsafe levels in every fish analysed.
We need action to:
💧 Stop pollution at source
💧 Strengthen monitoring and standards
💧 Upgrade wastewater treatment, paid for by polluters
Healthy rivers need stronger protection.

A closed season to protect pregnant hares was promised – where is the legislation?
“In the King’s Speech last week, the government quietly dropped a bill that would have finally given legal protection to hares after centuries of persecution”
Why????
Such a simple thing to save beautiful hares and their families

"So far, the UK is on track to achieve three of the 23 targets by 2030: ... "
"However, for 19 targets, progress is being made at an insufficient rate and progress against one target is unknown."
“The UK has just four years left to meet its legally binding target to halt the decline in nature by 2030. Sustained polling shows that ... people back saving nature – and the Government needs to act fast to step up nature recovery before it is too late.” https://t.co/hQdF0V1VFA

🚨 Three hikers dead and at least 10 missing after deadly eruption at Mt Dukono 🚨
There’s been a deadly eruption at Mount Dukono in Indonesia today.
Authorities now say at least 3 hikers have died, with at least 10 still missing and rescue teams continuing searches on the volcano tonight.
The eruption sent ash around 10km into the sky and happened despite an exclusion zone already being in place because of increased volcanic activity.
These volcanoes are not tourist attractions first. They’re active, unpredictable and can turn catastrophic in seconds.
