1/3 Ever wondered how to perform spatial transcriptomics in tissues that are difficult to section? Want to combine this with in situ or in vivo microscopy? Check out my first paper as a (co-)corresponding author now out in @naturemethods!
The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.
The goal of a PhD is not to learn some facts or read a few papers or learn a bunch of techniques. The goal of a PhD is to learn independence, problem solving, how to finish things you start, resilience, & gain the ability to adapt & think creatively. Learning these things is hard
In a historic and unprecedented move, all of the institutions at the @NIH have signed on to and sent a letter, the Bethesda Declaration, to the new director, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, about the chaos at the NIH. This is a big deal, as it ultimately impacts all of us. It impacts the research that gets done or not done. It impacts what we know or what we will never know. Let’s see what the response will be, as the director is scheduled to testify before Congress tomorrow about the NIH’s budget.
In other news, speaking of unprecedented, Bhattacharya‘s boss just removed all 17 members of the CDC’s vaccine advisers, saying the group is “plagued with conflicts of interest.”
It’s a chaotic, unprecedented time. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. Yes the noise is loud, but we must continue to pay attention to what matters and stay informed and engaged! #abovethenoise
The NSF just awarded the fewest Graduate Research Fellowships in 15 years- cutting the number in half. We talk about investing in innovation, but decisions like this say otherwise and puts our future generation of scientists at risk.
Prospective PhD students looking for a host institution with outstanding facilities and an impressive critical mass of world class groups spanning all aspects of cancer research, check out the DKFZ international graduate school program.
1) Since there is a lot of confusion about the reduction of the overhead rate on NIH grants to 15% (see here: https://t.co/K8dtrCzDnj) I'll do a little tweetorial (or X-torial?) about it.

If women gave up every time we got evidence people hate us or don't even consider us people, nothing would ever get done.
So take a minute, "honor" the reality of the awful feelings, but then we're back to our regularly scheduled program of building the least-worst world we can.
What I envisioned PIs do when I 1st got into science: read/write papers, discuss science w/ students, teach & prepare lectures
What PIs actually do: edit biosafety/animal protocols, manage lab finances, solve HR problems, write/grade exams, write reference letters, review grants
