35 years. 4 National Championships. One Big 12 Championship. Countless players who went on to become leaders long after the final whistle. None of that happened by accident.
Here is what I learned coaching for three and a half decades:
Productive at bat should be an official hitting statistic.
What is a productive at bat?
I'll give you a hint.
It either produces a base runner (you) without an out.
or
It moves a runner by design.
or
It scores a runner.
or
It drives pitch counts.
Yes, you can have a selfish quality at bat by definition and it can be non productive.
Productive at bats win games.
Check your ego at the door and be productive for your team.
Nobody cares what your exit velocity or launch angle is when you don't produce for the team.
Gave a classroom session to our high school team instead of practicing in 30 degree temps.
Discussed every base state with every possible number of outs not to mention counts.
Here’s what I’m thinking offensively/ defensively.
The best play this game pitch to pitch.
Notes from @ButchBaseball29 on Pitching Philosophy…much needed review with my pitchers after good pens, but rough scrimmages before we wrap up our pre- Season
I started to realize something that changed everything.
We're solving the wrong problem.
Watch hitters in games vs practice.
They get stiff.
Jumpy.
And here's what nobody talks about:
Their bat speed actually slows down in games.
Not because they're weak or tired.
But because they're reacting to 4 different pitches instead of teeing off on BP fastballs.
Their body control? Gone.
The second pressure enters the equation.
From the pitch coming at them.
The pitcher staring them down.
The environment closing in.
Everything changes.
And that's when it all clicked.
We're not training hitters to look good in BP.
We're training them to perform when their nervous system is on fire.
When every muscle wants to tense up.
When adrenaline is flooding their veins.
The monkey mind starts to come alive.
When their brain is screaming "DON'T LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT."
That's the actual problem.
Not perfect mechanics in your comfort zone.
But executing moves under pressure. Pitch pressure and environment pressure.
That's what separates hitters. (and hitting coaches)
We all look at big plays/elite skills. But doing little things right gets you in mix at the top.
Golf: Keep ball in play. Chip/putt well
Football: Don’t turn it over. Stay ahead of sticks, make teams take chances.
Baseball: Don’t allow free bases. Take walks, put balls in play
UPDATE: Now DiamondFlow Pro includes a "Throw" Mode, allowing u to throw the baseball from position to position. More realistic pick plays/relays. I'm convinced there isn't a simpler/more effective tool on the market. One Time $10 Fee! Great for all ages. https://t.co/sFmTbm9Xun

Coaches, I know you want them to “talk it up” and “get loud” but let’s also teach the this huge part of the game!!
Customizable Situations with animation:"Set Start Positions" allows you to lock your defense in place. Move the baseball and your players as you see fit. Hit "Play" to show your team the exact movement required for that bunt defense or a relay.
