Before becoming a software engineer, I was a seafarer. In the maritime industry there was a shift similar to what AI is in development work.

Up until GPS was developed, only seafarers could make cross-Atlantic passages, because you needed star observation and other navigational techniques to stay on track. That's what made you a professional, distinguished from another person, so to speak. GPS lowered the entry into the industry by a lot.

The same thing is happening to the software development world: writing code does not make us special anymore. Deal with it and start learning what you can achieve with the infinite amount of code you can generate. Improve THAT skill. And lower your EGO

it’s almost unbelievable how quickly our government is handing bad actors asymmetric cyber advantages on a silver platter

good actors will not jailbreak models for defense capabilities or illegally download banned open weight models. bad actors can and will do both

the "good guy with a gun" argument breaks down because a gun cannot stop a bullet already coming at you; guns can only provide counteroffense as defense. large language models are the opposite as they provide deep structural advantages to defenders, all else being equal, because they benefit from tools like encryption that make defense cheap and offense expensive

we should be accelerating the use of LLMs for cyber defense, and instead we are suicidally neutering them
