Yesterday, we convened a simulation workshop to test our forthcoming handbook, Protecting Non-Profit Organisations from Terrorism Financing Abuse and Unintended Policy Harm: It Begins with You.

The workshop demonstrated the handbook's practical value, with participants applying its guidance to real-world scenarios while providing insightful feedback that will strengthen the final publication.

❝One area I would like us to emphasize is the need to go beyond securing judgments and focus on monitoring and implementation. Our experience has shown that once a judgment is delivered, the legal victory is only one part of the journey. The real impact lies in transforming the systems and structures that gave rise to the injustice in the first place.
As we develop a continental litigation strategy for reproductive justice, our work should extend beyond the courtroom to tracking the implementation of judgments, holding governments accountable, and ensuring that court decisions translate into meaningful change for the people they are intended to serve.❞

The @MinofHealthUG presented progress in strengthening self-care integration through policy development, capacity building, digital innovations, service delivery, and monitoring.

The NCD programme emphasized the close relationship between self-care and prevention and management of chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, cancers, mental health conditions, and respiratory diseases. Participants were encouraged to promote healthy lifestyles, routine screening, early detection, and effective management of chronic illnesses as key elements of self-care.

CEHURD shared its role as part of the self-care movement in Uganda, focusing on coordination, advocacy, awareness creation, and integration of self-care across programmes and communities.
The organization highlighted efforts to orient staff on self-care and ensure that interventions are integrated into programmes implemented across more than 50 districts. CEHURD emphasized that self-care should not be treated as a standalone activity but embedded within existing health interventions, district plans, budgets, and community engagements.

One critical area of discussion was the linkage local actors create between communities and government programmes such as PDM and UWEP. This has been identified as a key challenge across several regions and remains a strategic priority that local actors have been urged to address closely. While pursuing strategic partnerships, the Co-Conveners were also reminded of the growing need to build lasting relationships and strengthen their branding.

I’m covering a significant step in Uganda’s Locally Led Development journey today.

@CapaidsUganda, with support from the @CIVICUSalliance, has successfully completed a full two-year Discovery and Ideation process under the Local Leadership Lab.

This process created a radically inclusive platform for last-mile local and national actors across seven sub-regions of Uganda. For many, it was the first time their lived realities around localization were properly heard and documented.

The work now moves from listening to action.

❝Justice professionals are not immune to the emotional impact of the work they do. Repeatedly interviewing victims and handling distressing cases can lead to secondary trauma, making it essential to seek peer support and openly discuss difficult experiences to safeguard your own mental wellbeing.
We must also recognise mental health conditions such as substance use disorders, psychosis, conduct disorder, epilepsy, and intellectual disabilities. When someone presents with disorganised behaviour, incoherent speech, or difficulty communicating, we should not simply label them as 'mad.' Instead, we must recognise these as possible signs of a mental health condition and ensure they receive the assessment, care, and support they need.❞

She shared insights from CEHURD's Legal Aid Clinic, highlighting how strategic litigation, legal aid, community empowerment, and partnerships with Justice, Law and Order Sector actors are advancing reproductive justice in Uganda.
Drawing from district-level interventions, she emphasized the importance of working closely with local leaders, Community Health Advocates (CHAs), and justice institutions to improve access to justice, strengthen referral pathways, and document stories of change that inform advocacy and systemic reform.

Our Executive Director Ms @FatiaKiyange described the #CEHURDJudicialColloquium as an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between CEHURD and justice sector institutions in advancing women's health, human rights, and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). She noted that judicial officers, law enforcement agencies, State Attorneys, health professionals, and local government leaders all have a shared responsibility in ensuring women and girls can access justice and quality healthcare.
She observed that while Uganda has made notable progress in reducing maternal mortality, significant challenges remain, particularly around teenage pregnancy, sexual and gender based violence, and barriers to justice.

❝Women's health is not just about physical health. It includes mental, emotional and social wellbeing, and that makes it both a human rights and a social justice issue. We have made progress in reducing maternal deaths, and decisions such as Petition No. 16 have shown that the judiciary has the power to influence policy, strengthen accountability and save lives. But we still have far too many girls becoming pregnant, far too many survivors of sexual violence unable to access justice, and too many cases that never make it to prosecution because of stigma, fear and weaknesses in enforcement. We cannot end teenage pregnancy without addressing poverty, child marriage, sexual violence, harmful cultural practices, limited access to comprehensive sexuality education, and the barriers that prevent survivors from seeking justice. Each institution represented here has a role to play in changing that reality.❞

She encouraged participants to adopt rights based, survivor centred, and trauma informed approaches in handling cases affecting women and girls, emphasizing that justice sector institutions have the ability to improve health outcomes through effective implementation of the law. She concluded by highlighting CEHURD's commitment to working alongside Justice, Law and Order Sector (JLOS) actors to expand access to justice, strengthen accountability, and advance strategic litigation that promotes women's health and #SRHR.
