It is always good to see human rights brought into the environment conversation. However, I would also point out that this is already a constitutional right in the Maldives - though what good that does to halt all the govt sanctioned degradation taking place, I don’t know.
#FellowshipOpportunity Dear GAIA members & journalist friends in Southeast Asia: learn more about biodiversity and how Zero Waste and our waste workers/pickers are the unsung heroes of biodiversity. Indeed, it’s time we highlight their significant contribution to the environment.
Thanks @mvplusmedia for covering Waheed’s story. He’s one of the first residents of VM who started swimming in the area & is standing up to protect these last remaining natural beaches for his grandchildren, to let them be able to use the beach as his children have. @MaleCitymv

We need these spaces for our health, well-being. Fiber working should only be done in places designed for such work, and hazardous waste contained and managed.

Hello beach lovers👋🏽 The picnic protest continues on Villimale’ east beach, on Friday & Saturday (13 & 14 May) 12pm onwards. Pls come and join us.
We aim to show the govt the beach is a much loved picnic beach that doesn’t deserve to be trashed by hazardous boat building waste⚠️
Everything you need to know about *the destruction happening on one of the last remaining natural beaches in Male’ city* - A Thread 🧵
On the afternoon of March 16th 2022, we discovered that a large patch of coastal vegetation on the East beach of Villimale’ had been cleared out.
We have recorded over 140 species of fish in Maldives seagrass meadows, including commercially important species like grouper, snapper & emperor. Up to 80% of them were juveniles!

As #MaldivesAtCOP26 deceptively chases #ParisAgreement funds, we are daily reminded of the self-inflicted loss & damage for which @governmentmv seeks "adaptation" funds.
#COP26 a global north "greenwash festival" with global south enablers! @theGCF
MVR 6,125,395.55 for the month of August from B atoll collected as Green tax.Nothing spent on Baa. Mangroves, reefs not preserved. While still Goidhoo, Fulhadhoo, Fehendhoo doesn't have proper medical centers , Schools, shame on us when we say its better in baa @governmentmv
I took the main stage at #COP26 to share my open, honest feelings. I felt physically and emotionally exhausted. Yet more hopeful at 22 than I was at 16, when I attended COP21. Not because of the so-called “leaders” behind closed doors - but because of the people in the streets.
The first draft of the #COP26 agreement text has been revealed, and contains no mention of the need to end fossil fuel emissions - critical to keep global temperatures under 1.5c.
Unacceptable.

#COP26
The world must look closely at the actions that the government of #Maldives has taken and has been taking with the donor finance it has received.
Don't just blindly listen and clap at what they feed their international media pals.
