Today is my last day as Assistant Secretary of @GovNuclear. It has been an absolute honor to serve in this capacity to help advance our U.S. nuclear energy R&D.
I plan to continue to use my talents to promote, lead and advance our nation’s largest source of clean energy so that our nation and my family will have a cleaner and more sustainable planet to protect.
This is some exciting work! These systems will leverage the latest innovations in advanced reactor development and will be able to provide consistent power regardless of the resources available on a planet.
.@NASA is working with @ENERGY to deploy and operate a nuclear power system on the moon 🌑 by the late 2020s. Here's what you need to know about fission surface power systems.

.@TAMUEngineering is an incredible program. We're very fortunate to have Dave managing our modeling and simulation R&D to help deliver codes like VERA that can simulate reactor core behavior down to a single fuel rod. #GigEm Dave!
GIG 'EM 👍 Congrats to @ENERGY's Dave Henderson for receiving a distinguished alumni award from @TAMUEngineering for his work in managing our modeling and simulation R&D portfolio to help deploy nuclear technologies.

Nuclear generates more power with out emissions than all other clean energy sources combined. We need to leverage this asset and improve upon it to help our nation meet its environmental and national security goals.
Our current fleet of reactors are operating at all-time high capacity factors. They are our nation’s largest source of clean power and should run as long as technically possible which, research shows, is 80 years and possibly even longer than that...
I’m grateful for the trailblazing work that Chairman Svinicki has led and am confident @NRCgov will continue to streamline the regulatory process in deploying a new generation of reactors that can help meet our nation’s environmental and national security needs.
#NRC News: Chairman Kristine Svinicki has announced she intends to step down on Jan. 20th after serving on the NRC Commission since 2008. For her full statement, go here: https://t.co/wIALvMf1LC
TRISO fuels can withstand extreme temperatures that are well beyond the threshold of current nuclear fuels. Since they’re structurally more robust, TRISO fuel testing is gaining a lot of interest from the advanced reactor community.
THIS IS THE YEAR! Unit 3 at Plant Vogtle
✅ is more than 95% complete
✅ received its first fuel shipment
✅ is on track to come online later this fall!

These 10 wins by @GovNuclear give us great momentum heading into 2021 and should set the stage for, what could be, an incredible decade for the industry.

More than 90% of the potential energy still remains in our commercial fuel even after five years of operation in a reactor. It’s only waste if we waste it!
It’s important to celebrate the wins, especially now during these difficult times. These 10 accomplishments are setting the stage for, what I believe, could be one of the most important decades ever for the nuclear industry!

About 95% of the hydrogen produced in the United States comes from natural gas. If we used 10 reactors to generate hydrogen, we could supply about a fifth of the hydrogen needed in the U.S. without emissions.
A single 1,000 megawatt nuclear reactor could produce more than 200,000 tonnes of hydrogen each year—opening up new markets for the industry.

The energy density of uranium is incredible and allows our reactors to generate more emissions-free electricity on significantly less land than all other clean energy sources combined.
Please take time to review the draft EIS on our Versatile Test Reactor project. This capability is a MUST HAVE in order to test and develop advanced technologies for current and future reactors. Public feedback is so important to this process.
Public comment is now open for feedback on
@ENERGY's draft Environmental Impact Statement on its proposed Versatile Test Reactor project.

We’re expanding @GovNuclear’s work and building on an already great collaboration with @NASA to help develop fission surface power and nuclear thermal propulsion systems to support future space missions.
.@NASA is sending a nuclear power system to the lunar surface by the late 2020s. The demonstration is the next BIG step in providing reliable power for missions on the Moon 🌑, Mars 🔴 and beyond...
