@AukeHoekstra@hausfath I agree that the term is overused, mostly because many don’t build and maintain models for individual assets. (eg. aircraft engines, gas turbines, …)
@AukeHoekstra@hausfath I’m catching this late so I’ve had both a coffee and a beer already, but my experience with digital twins is that they represent not only the model of an asset, but include history of maintenance, upgrades, weather events, etc. So they are a distinct model of THIS asset.
@drvolts GE/Prolec announced a flexible transformer a few years ago to address this. It might be interesting to check out where that development is now.
@drvolts Seriously long lead times and expense are in part due to the bespoke nature of transformer design. They are essentially tailored to the application that you want, the location where it goes, the voltage it will handle, the power that you need, etc.

This is one of the most under appreciated aspects of the benefits that will come from the latest round of industrial investment in the US (CHIPS, BIL, IRA).
By ‘doing more’ we’ll be building the talent to ‘do more’. 💪
One argument for attempting to reinvigorate domestic manufacturing in chips, batteries etc is basically “insurance” against future disruptions (a la Covid, War etc).
And then another is basically this. That to advance technologically, you need more people doing the doing.

@JacquelynGill I have this same impairment. One time I went down a medical terminology rabbit hole for some reason and couldn’t recover. After gems like “M as in mammogram” and “A as in aneurysm” the service worker paused me to ask if I was OK. 🤦🏽♀️
