#Ethiopian-born ‘most impactful geneticist’ Gebisa Ejeta awarded #US National Medal of Science
President Joe Biden on Tuesday (Oct. 24) awarded the National Medal of Science to Gebisa Ejeta, Distinguished Professor of Plant Breeding & Genetics and International Agriculture, executive director of the Purdue Center for Global Food Security and Purdue University Presidential Fellow for Food Security and Sustainable Global Development.
The award is the highest recognition the nation bestows upon scientists.
Gebisa studies sorghum, an ancient grain used widely as a food source for humans and livestock. He received the 2009 World Food Prize for his research in creating sorghum hybrids that are resistant to both severe drought and the destructive parasitic Striga weed. The resulting dramatic increase in sorghum production has helped feed hundreds of millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa.
"Gebisa Ejeta is one of the most impactful geneticists in the world, a remarkable leader at Purdue in food security research, and a role model of perseverance for all Boilermakers. Our university celebrates another prestigious and richly deserved honor, bestowed by the president of the United States, to Gebisa, and I am delighted to join him on behalf of our university at the White House ceremony today," said Purdue University President Mung Chiang.
"With this latest exciting news, Purdue faculty and alumni have received 19 National Medals of Science, of Technology and Innovation, of Humanities or the Presidential Medal of Freedom, including three current faculty members." https://t.co/P0GdznD3KN

It is strange that #Ethiopia says it wants a quick implementation of the Pretoria peace deal with #Tigray when it delays its implementation, and I wonder to whom the statement is addressed.
"Ethiopia told the United Nations on Saturday it wanted quicker implementation of a peace deal in Tigray, including the disarmament of former rebels." https://t.co/pSUbqq3wFd
…. the commission said human rights violations in Tigray were “grave and ongoing”, and there had been attacks by the Eritrean Defence Forces (EDF) against civilians.

Sport unites people. Sport keeps us healthy.
This is why @WHO is organizing the Walk the Talk: #HealthForAll Challenge in New York City tomorrow, to give #UNGA a healthy start and unite leaders ahead of critical discussions.
My friend Thomas Bach, @Olympics Committee President, and I are on our way to NYC now. We hope to see you there!
A shocking organized large-scale theft in Tigray involving the TPLF, the IRA, TDF leaders, traders and aid organizations. The theft involves everything including construction materials, steel, vehicles, aid and fertilizers. 1/n

Fano's armed group crossed the border into Oromia and massacred 40 innocent people in Wolga, Gida Ayana.
however, Fano has not been classified as a terrorist by the government.
The IC saw worst of mass massacres, sexual abuses by gangs, destroyed/burnt private & gov't possesses and knew empty left. But not strong action. Now again IC sees worst of worst of exterminating due to famine and still not strong action.
So who would save the earth? @UN@POTUS
Alert: Ethiopian govt, who opposed UNHRC intern’l comm. of experts to investigate the war crimes committed in Tigray, has engaged in destroying evidences of the genocide by digging out mass-graves in Western Tigray. UN reports that 1.2m people r under ethnic cleansing in W Tigray
Catastrophic #TigraySiege openly against int'l law and mind...Terribly worst #WarCrime on people who are cradle for civilization but not to see the int'l community and @POTUS to say enough is terribly disappointing
@eu_eeas@SecBlinken@BBCNews
We applaud President Biden’s call for a trial against Vladimir Putin’s war crime on Ukraine. It’s very disappointing that he didn’t uphold the same stand against African #TigrayGenocide. The intern’l community has terribly failed Tigrayans @POTUS@USAmbUN https://t.co/WzeHPtlJ5g
President Biden has called for a war crimes trial against Putin. @POTUS must now call for war crimes trials against Ethiopia's @AbiyAhmedAli & Eritrea's Isaias Afwerki. There should be no difference in how the US responds to African vs European war crimes https://t.co/dxjNznimKN
Men, women, & children are dying of starvation in Tigray. @PMEthiopia
uses rape & access to food as weapons of war. @POTUS has offered to take in Ukraine refugees. This is a good thing. We now ask @POTUS to allow Tigrayan refugees to come to the US. Let us do the right thing @UN
