@shimulshah73@MGHSurgery@BrighamSurgery I understand the life saved, but important when you celebrate to keep in mind that someone’s loved one has also died (on Christmas) to make this transplant possible. It is probably best not to post photos from the operating room with a patient on the table, and another life lost.
Grateful to @theTHORnetwork for the opportunity to speak on the ethics of RhD+ transfusion during trauma resuscitation of women. This is an amazing network of researchers and clinicians making a huge difference in global transfusion practices, and I'm honored to now be part of it
With increasing use of low titer O whole blood in trauma resuscitations, questions can arise around the ethics of Rh exposure to Rh negative females of childbearing age.
@DocEthics gives us solid guidance on what to do.

🚨NEW PAPER🚨
It's live! With open access in the @hastingscenter. We argue that despite its promising clinical utility, there good reasons not to use #NRP in donation-after-circulatory-determination-of-death protocols. A 🧵to explain why...

@AdamOmelianchuk@ChristosLazari3@rkchoi This is absolute rubbish. A totally new explanation that seems designed to circumvent objections. And so the gerrymandering continues…
@AdamOmelianchuk It is a bizarre argument. Everything they say about the hypothalamus is true about, say, the pupillary light response. Not critical for integrative unity, not responsible for personhood, etc. But no one argues we ignore the pupils. Hypothalamus seems much more important…
"...transfusion of RhD-positive blood to RhD-negative or RhD-unknown females of childbearing potential with life-threatening hemorrhage is an ethically appropriate strategy."

@francisdeng They also didn't report differences in analgesia during the procedure. No difference in pain at 1, 4, and 8 weeks, and in the ED they used "analgesia provided as appropriate". Kids tend not to like it when you touch their broken arm with an ultrasound probe.
@IAmSamFin@jbcarmody@acedens That fourth ICU rotation is relevant to your career, guaranteed. Looks like you’re going into genetics? ICU is where you will see the most severe expressions of genetic disease. It will help you counsel future patients and families. We can move you to the “winners” column!
During the #Covid19 pandemic hospitals had plans on who would receive the last ventilator or other life saving items? Listen to this Capturing COVID episode as I talk with @DocEthics, a Peds critical care and bioethicist on how these decisions were made. https://t.co/oGeRQyL3zp
@jcbriscoe1 I like Law and Bioethics: An Introduction by Jerry Menikoff. It includes legal opinions and commentary related to the bioethical issues. It is written for a non-legal professional audience.
