๐จ The @AfricaCDC statement on the new #Ebola outbreak in #DRC is deeply concerning.
๐ฌ This is a non-Zaire ebolavirus outbreak
๐งช 13 of 20 samples tested positive
โ ๏ธ 246 suspected cases reported
๐๏ธ 65 deaths, including 4 laboratory workers
This highlights the urgent need for enhanced surveillance, rapid diagnostics, infection prevention and control, and protection of frontline healthcare and laboratory personnel.
@LongDesertTrain Thanks Ryan! Recommend getting in touch with Yaron Tomer, who wrote the code and is super helpful. Happy to put you in touch if you need.
Big shout out to co-first authors @kareem_alb and Declan Winters! Also to our stellar collaborators, couldnโt do it without you. Collaboration makes the dream work!
Thrilled to share the first major preprint from the lab. Viruses are classically viewed as targets of host sensing. Do viruses also sense and respond to the host? We propose viruses may act as โbiosensorsโ of the host signaling state. A thread๐๐พ

In sum, our findings suggest the possibility that viruses evolved as biosensors of the host signaling state, unveiling new antiviral opportunities aimed at disrupting virus decision-making.
Another great short essay, by Paul Nurse, 2021:
"Theorizing should be encouraged, and theories should be included in experimental papers to put data in context."
Happy Holidays from the Bouhaddou Lab @MicrobioUcla@UCLAQCBio@UCLA. Itโs been a productive year and the group is growing. Feel lucky to get to do science with good people.
Congratulations to Yennifer Delgado @Delgado_Yenn PhD student in my group for receiving the @NSF GRFP, a competitive 3-year fellowship for graduate students, and to Declan Winters for an honorable mention. You guys are amazing. Iโm lucky to work with you!
Stellar presentation by Yennifer Delgado @Delgado_Yenn at the @MicrobioUcla virology seminar series, PhD student in the lab, talking about her work on membrane protein phosphorylation โ stay tuned for updates
