The High Commission of India, in collaboration with @WadhwaniAI, organized the “AI for Impact Global South Forum” on 21 January 2026 in Kigali. The event was a prelude to the India AI Impact Summit 2026 being organized by the Government of India from 16-20 February 2026 in New Delhi. It brought together around 60 leaders, policymakers, development partners, and innovators working in the AI and related sectors.
Hon'ble MoS for ICT and Innovation of Rwanda, @yves_Iradukunda graced the event as the Guest of Honor. In his keynote address, he emphasized that Africa’s success in AI depends on deliberate investments in human capital and use cases that unlock impact. He also called for Africa as a whole to come together, to leverage the power of a connected, youthful continent to solve shared problems and challenges.
In his remarks, High Commissioner @IFS_Mridu said that while AI was advancing rapidly across the world, most global AI conversations were still shaped by contexts very different from those of the Global South. He called for redoubling our efforts to ensure that there was no AI divide in terms of absence of computing power, models, resources and talent. He also emphasised that the Government of India has endeavored to democratize AI, bridge AI divide, and utilize the transformative potential of AI for the benefit of one and all.
The event also included a panel discussion "AI for Our Realities - How Rwanda and India are designing context-led innovation: Lessons and the way forward" , moderated by Mr. Nakul Jain, CEO, Wadhwani AI Global with panelists such as @DrAdelakin Olivier Twagirayezu, Director of Rwanda AI Scaling Hub, @c4ir_rw, Mr. Nasser Kanesa, Head of Public Sector Innovation, @giz_rwanda, @TonySebera
The High Commission thanks Ministry of ICT & Innovation, Government of Rwanda @RwandaICT , @UNICEF@UNFPA@UNDP and the panelists for their kind support in organizing the event.
