@meadows264 Math can be easily integrated into almost any other subject during school. Measuring can be shown when cooking which can be considered a science lesson.
@meadows264 I think manipulatives and everyday objects that students see around the classroom can be helpful for this. Model to the students how you can take a certain amount of objects and group them, add them, or take some away can still lead to the same total number of objects.
@Nicole34141982 @meadows264 I experienced this too! I think we both have mentioned this before. I never understood discounts and percentages when doing worksheets in the classroom. But when my mom taught me how to calculate sales and tip amounts, it made it clearer for me to understand them.
@janieserna3 In geometry, our teacher let us go around the school and look at signs, architecture, objects, etc. and draw certain shapes that stood out to us. We then came together and shared our shapes and started to name them based on their properties.
@janieserna3 In school, I remember using our math textbooks as units of measurement. We would go into groups and see if it would be easier to use the length, width, or height of the textbooks to measure different objects (people, tables, desk height, etc.) It was fun doing it in groups.
@WenzelCassidy We can start by giving a problem out to our students and encourage them to try and solve the problem in whatever way they can in their head or on paper if they need. Then we can discuss as a class what they did. I was never given this opportunity and I think it's super effective.
@WenzelCassidy I really like the idea of a newsletter to parents that inform them on the way that mathematics is taught in your class. By having a newsletter, you can keep them updated on how their child is learning math so when they are doing math related work at home the parents can help too.
@Nicole34141982 @WenzelCassidy I experienced this too, Nicole. My teachers would model how to solve a new math concept by doing problems on the board over and over again. My notes typically consisted of me trying to scribble down the steps my teacher took but they never problem solved along with us.
@janieserna3@SallyMc84272297 I thought about this too Janie. I realized when we challenge you all to split up the Oreos to an extra person that we sort of introduced fractions as well. You all were making comments saying "these aren't equal pieces" when tearing them apart. This is a concept of fractions.
@SallyMc84272297 I've tried thinking about how I used to express fractions and I can't pinpoint a time. I do remember learning about pieces of pie or pizza and also vocab like numerator or denominator but I can't really explain when or how I truly understood what a fraction was.
@mathloverxoxo I think the whole idea of lining up the place values and also decimals, in general, can be very tricky. I think this comes from the idea that when they are taught to read left to right. In math, everything needs to be lined from right to left and decimals follow this rule also
@mathloverxoxo I first thought about base-ten blocks, but since this is only about combinations that equal 10, I then thought of using their fingers which is also what a few other girls said. Kids rely on their fingers a lot to help them which can be a very meaningful way to make connections
@mathloverxoxo@MadelineSprowls I agree with this as well, Tori! When students are being drilled with only one process/strategy and cannot seem to grasp it, they can start to push away from math and begin to resent it. We need to encourage all ways of solving one problem and value them equally.
@MadelineSprowls one of the most valuable things I've learned in this class so far was when Stephen said, "we need to move away from the idea that math is about getting the right answer." This idea just opens up math into a whole process of collaborative thinking and explaining.
@WolfordCassidy when our students find these "shortcuts" I think it's important to point them out but challenge that student and the whole class to find out why and how those short cuts work. Together, with the help from us, students can develop that deeper understanding behind the shortcuts.

I found that we normally just made sure we all got the same answers and if we didn't, then we would look at the same procedure we all did and see if they did any miscalculations. There were never sharing of different ways of solving the problem.
@WolfordCassidy In my preschool placement, when the girls stringed wood cookies for every day they were at school. they also divided the wood cookies apart w/ a red bead when they reached a group of 10. This gave them a visualization of groups of 10. They counted by ten then counted the extras.
@alymekinda I've personally experienced this my daycare. when students are asked to put an equal amount of toys in a certain amount of shelves when it's time for clean up, they can work through how many they started with until they get to the answer. they don't even know they just did M/D.
@LayneMorton2 @KatieKreczmer I agree! It's important to first assess what the students already know about math concepts/facts. From there, you can build off of their prior knowledge and also take real world examples that the experience every day to allow connections to be built.
@GiaRossi4@Madison43189033 My CT in my FEEP classroom did a similar scenario. She had a sign with different objects taped on it. She had a price next to it and told the students they each get a certain amount of money. They were to then find out how many combinations of things they can get. They loved it!
