Press Release: Statement by the El-Rufai Family. The family of Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), former Governor of Kaduna State and Opposition Leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has noted with serious concern the allegations made by General Christopher Musa (Rtd.), Minister of Defence, on 3 September 2026 during a live television broadcast of Politics Today on Channels Television. During the programme, General Musa alleged that Mallam Nasir El-Rufai actively planned killings in Southern Kaduna while serving as Governor of Kaduna State.

This grave allegation was made without the presentation of any evidence in support of the claim. While General Musa (Rtd.) is entitled to hold and express his personal opinions, the El-Rufai family is equally entitled to demand that such serious allegations be substantiated with credible evidence.

In the absence of such evidence, we call on him to publicly retract the allegation through the same medium on which it was made. Accordingly, General Musa (Rtd.) is hereby given seven (7) days from the date of this statement to either provide evidence in support of his allegation or issue a full public retraction and apology.

Failure to do so will leave the family with no option but to pursue all appropriate legal remedies available under the law in response to these unsubstantiated allegations.

7 September 2001 was not an ordinary day. It was a day that left a permanent scar on the memories of the Hausa-Fulani Muslim community in Jos. Twenty-five years may have passed, but some memories do not grow old.

Why do we need to remember?

We remember not to teach hatred, revenge or division, but to preserve the truth against contamination and learn from the wounds of the past. We remember because a people without memory can easily become victims of history again. Let the world know that these days were real, these losses were real, and the tears were real. We may forgive, we may seek peace, and we may choose reconciliation but we WILL never forget.

Is there a need for our upcoming generation to know?

Yes, for them to know the nature of their town, people, diversity and other issues.

I will personally never forget that Friday. I will never forget that Saturday. And I will never forget that rainy Wednesday. They were not ordinary days. They were days of fear, survival, loss and unimaginable pain.

We must remind the world of the lives we lost, almost 1,000 people according to accounts of the violence. Behind every figure was a human life, a family, a story, a future that was suddenly cut short by the enemies of peace calling themselves “Yan Kasa”.

We must remember the homes that were set ablaze, the properties destroyed, businesses wiped out, farms and other sources of livelihood lost, and the wealth accumulated by families over generations reduced to ashes within days.

We must remember those who were displaced from their homes. We must remember mothers who lost children, children who became orphans, husbands who lost wives and wives who lost husbands.

And we must remember the fear, the anxiety, the uncertainty and the feeling that the place we called home was suddenly no longer safe.

Some may want history to move on without looking back. But you cannot heal a wound by pretending it never existed.

For us, the lesson was profound.

We learned that security cannot be taken for granted. We learned that communities must remain vigilant. We learned that friendship must be tested by difficult times, not merely by peaceful days.

But most importantly, we learned the value of unity, self-preservation, solidarity and peaceful coexistence.

We remember those terrible days not because we seek revenge, but because we refuse to allow the suffering of our people to disappear from history.

Our dead deserve to be remembered, our displaced deserve to be remembered and our destroyed homes and livelihoods deserve to be remembered as well.

And the lessons of 2001 deserve to be remembered. Twenty-five years later, I still remember that Friday, Saturday and that rainy Wednesday. The memories are still fresh because the losses were real, the pain was real and history must never forget.

We won't be the first to ignite a fire, but if another person ignite the fire, we'll use every available means to extinguish the fire to protect ourselves and to ensure we're not victims.

You wonder why there is so much hate for Islam? You wonder why when Islam comes into the picture, double standards set in?

I will tell you today.

Let’s look at how the world treats women. The loudest voices shout "her body, her choice" all year round. That rule applies to everyone until a Muslim woman decides to cover her body.

A Catholic nun walks down the street in a full habit and society praises her pure devotion. A Muslim woman wears a hijab and suddenly politicians call it a symbol of oppression. The government steps in to police her wardrobe and they have the nerve to call it liberation. You cannot liberate a woman by forcing her to uncover against her will.

The same script plays out for the men. A guy grows a large beard for fashion or for another religion and he is just expressing his personal style. A Muslim man grows his beard out of devotion and overnight society labels him a security threat.

Why does this happen?

The modern secular world demands that your ultimate submission must be to the state and its cultural norms. Religion is only tolerated if it is kept hidden in your heart or inside a building on the weekend.

Islam rejects that. Islam is a complete system of life that says your ultimate submission is only to God. That level of unshakeable, public conviction terrifies a system built on shifting trends.

When a far-right party in France tries to ban the hijab, they are not trying to protect women. They are trying to erase a visible reminder of a faith they cannot control. They preach freedom of expression but they panic when a Muslim expresses their faith. That is not freedom. That is forced compliance masquerading as liberty.

And for every far-right ideology, this is only the beginning of a much bigger agenda to strip away Islamic identity piece by piece. Banning a piece of cloth is just their testing ground.

The real goal is to push Muslims completely out of the public square, dictate how we live, and force us to choose between our faith and our basic right to exist in society.

The solidarity movement we are seeing in France right now shows that everyday people are starting to see through the hypocrisy. But we have to keep calling it out. The double standard thrives when we stay quiet.
