The most important driver of Global CO2 emissions is China’s coal use. There is no close second place, and it should be THE largest focus globally. If we do not solve for this now, there is precisely zero chance the world will come anywhere near its co2 goals.

Some numbers:

- China is the largest producer of CO2 globally, producing 10 billion tons of co2 per year.

- That’s 2X the number 2 country (the US = 5 bn tons), 4X the #3 country (India = 2bn tons), and 13X the #6 country (Germany)

- China’s coal use is responsible for 8.2 billion of their 10 billion tons of annual CO2. This single source from one country is responsible for around 25% of the world’s CO2.

- For context, China’s coal use emits 17X more than the emissions from every passenger vehicle in the United States. If you’re passionate about electric vehicles, kudos to you, but it doesn’t matter.

Now, China is often touted as being the world leader in renewable energy, installing more wind and solar than the rest of the world combined. This effort should be applauded, but often times the analysis stops there and the conclusion is often “China is showing us the way”.

What the talking heads miss is that China’s growth in energy consumption is outpacing even their feverish pace of renewable installation. Yes, renewables are growing relatively quickly, but it’s nowhere near the pace that’s needed.

And the fuel source that fills “the gap” is more coal. And lots of it.

Here is the important part related to the chart below. For years now, China has promised the world their renewables program will be able to catch up to demand growth and ONE DAY SOON their renewables will be able to displace their coal use.

But this hasn’t happened. Not even close.

What the chart below shows are China’s projections for their coal use, timestamped by year, measured in tons of coal (Sidenote, 1 ton of coal emits roughly 1.5 tons of co2).

Every single year China releases a projection that says “okay we have 1 mayyyyybe 2 years left of needing to build more coal plants, and then that’s it”. But every year, China has blown through their coal use projections. In 2023, China burned more than 1 billion tons more coal than their projection based in 2018.

And the result, is Global Co2 emissions have risen to all time highs.

Maybe this trend finally reverses. Who knows. But history tells us this is going to continue. And worse yet, India is 5 years behind China and likely going to follow the same game plan.

This isn’t a “knock” against China or India, or the rest of the developing world. They have the right to build energy and provide for their people. It’s a knock against the rest of the world for not offering them a cleaner alternative.

The point here is this. Nothing we do matters unless China’s coal use is brought under control. And the longer the world leaves them on their own, the longer this persists. It is the most absurd “look the other way” set up in the energy transition.

If you are serious about abating CO2, put down your orange bucket of paint and wake up to what’s really going on.

If you’re an energy transition researcher, take your head out of your domestic sand box and realize the most efficient way your country can abate CO2 is not inside its borders, but outside it by offering China solutions.

The largest solution a country like the United States has to offer is our natural gas shipped to China via LNG. Instead, the Biden Administration just did the opposite and shut down future LNG approvals. For those passionate about abating CO2 this should be an outrage. But it’s not.

Hopefully the chart below helps illuminate how damaging of a decision that is. And hopefully people better appreciate the big picture here.
