The situation in #Gaza has never been so dire: essential humanitarian and medical aid has barely entered since the beginning of May leaving hundreds of thousands of people without food, water, shelter and medicine and hospitals without fuel. According to the #UN, 900,000 people have yet again been displaced in these past three weeks alone, as Israel’s offensive in Rafah has intensified and heavy fighting is taking place in the north of the enclave.
We continue to call for an immediate and sustained ceasefire for all of Gaza, as it is the only way to stop the indiscriminate killing of civilians and allow for the substantial provision and delivery of aid on a meaningful scale, which is needed now more than ever throughout the Strip.
Today's decision by the International Court of Justice (#ICJ) ordering #Israel to halt its offensive on #Rafah in southern Gaza and to reopen the Rafah crossing is another confirmation of how catastrophic the situation is and of the desperate need for humanitarian aid to be scaled up immediately.
We have been calling for an immediate and sustained #ceasefire in Gaza since the beginning of this war and have been alerting on the disastrous consequences of this offensive on Rafah since it was announced for the first time in February.
The Geneva Conventions represent the strongest universal consensus on the need to preserve #humanity in war & our shared understanding of #humanity characterized by the equal worth of all human beings.

We mourn the loss of many humanitarian workers, including our colleagues from the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), who have been killed or injured in #Gaza. These brave individuals lost their lives assisting a civilian population suffering from bombings, displacement, and a dire humanitarian situation.
Rwanda flights will never happen now. You’ll hear takes of ‘it was never going to happen anyway’. Never forget there was a plane on the tarmac with people restrained & forced onboard.
Flights didn’t happen because brilliant lawyers & NGOs, brave people & public support.
We won

The “Safety of Rwanda” bill was passed by the UK Parliament: both @UNHumanRights and UNHCR are very concerned by this decision, which breaches refugee law and won’t help address the challenges of irregular population movements.

There's been a scandalous 239% increase in refugee homelessness.
Left unsupported, newly recognised refugees are becoming homeless & destitute because of a system dysfunctional by design & discriminatory in delivery.

Instead of giving these people a fair hearing on UK soil to determine if they have a protection need, the Government prefers to look after them indefinitely, at considerable cost.
The Prime Minister's speech this morning overlooked the glaring reality: the Rwanda plan will only compound the chaos within our asylum system, all at an exorbitant cost to taxpayers.

Across the border, food and clean water wait.
But @UNRWA is denied permission to deliver this aid and save lives" - UNRWA chief @UNLazzarini

.@WHO update from #Gaza:
"According to the Ministry of Health, there are more than 23,000 fatalities, of which 70% women & children. That is actually 1% of the population in Gaza.
We also talk about almost 59,000 people injured, which is 2.7% of the total population."
South Africa legal team's Adila Hassim @CIJ_ICJ: “Genocides are never declared in advance, but this court has the benefit of the past 13 weeks of evidence that shows incontrovertibly a pattern of conduct & related intention that justifies a plausible claim of genocidal acts.”
Safe spaces are empowering women and girls in conflict zones.
In north-west #Syria, they offer counseling, livelihood opportunities and artistic outlets.
But they need scaled-up support: 17 spaces have already closed this year due to underfunding and more are at risk.

It is essential to come together around real, practical and meaningful climate solutions that match the scale of the climate crisis.”
