This letter is awesome. Love that @citystatebeer tells the story of being concerned about bike lanes going up on 8th St only to find that, indeed, bike access was good for business!
All this is to say that there's a cost to doing business, and it's unreasonable to expect a small business to eat all of those costs. Going to a cafe, bar or restaurant is a LUXURY, not a necessity. And while we may love doing it, love alone doesnβt keep the lights on. 7/7
From a @wapo oped... @DDOTDC ... 100% this. *every alternative route* that goes N/S to Connecticut has the problem of NOT BEING Connecticut. It is the most direct path. It has the lowest average grade. It actually has the destinations that people want to bike to on it.
Really wild to see @DDOTDC proposing the removal of some crosswalks on Connecticut Ave. Maybe it is time to consider breaking DDOT into one agency that deals with drivers/parking and a second one tasked with transportation safety.
This is royally fucked and will actively harm DCβs efforts to become a safer, more climate-friendly city. We needed protected bike lanes on Connecticut Ave five years agoβthe next best time to add them is right now @DDOTDC
Is CT Ave really even a safety project anymore when theyβre reducing crosswalks and widening lanes? Those two factors alone should it disqualify from any funding.
And no just because a Car Planner says itβs for safety does not mean itβs for safety.
Someone literally had to die for the city to deign to put bike lanes on Florida Ave NE. Is that what it will take to accommodate cyclists on Connecticut Ave NW? π²βΉοΈ
Yesterday was World Bike Day, also the day when @DDOT said Connecticut Ave would be inviting even more cars to park on it during more hours, and that there is no room for bikes. Cyclists and scooters can risk their lives and use the street.
Just got turned away from @GiantFood at 1400 7th St NW b/c of new policy prohibiting customers w/backpacks. @MayorBowser, I thought DC promoted car free living. We provide @wmata & @DCCirculator service to this location, but now commuters headed home w/backpacks canβt stop in?
Peirce Mill was open today. My dad and I were on a drizzly morning hike that turned into an impromptu history lesson from some very well-informed volunteers.
The mill is patented: US Patent No. 3 (3!!!) signed by George Washington.
