.@USEmbassyBurma We shouldn’t repeat past mistakes. Prisoners should be released. But ALSO we need to go further than before. Give them real remedies for their suffering: Healthcare, training, employment, rehabilitation, compensation, and accountability.
We asked UNESCO to do HRIA but nothing yet. The word “guidelines” means “how to do”. (It does not mean “how to do if you have democratic intentions”.) The UN encouraging authoritarian governments to regulate digital platforms is extremely risky. The platforms might listen too..
.@UNESCO Version 3.0: GNI notes with concern the impression a number of digital rights groups have expressed that their input, while welcomed, has not been heard or taken seriously.
GNI hopes these comments will be taken into account going forward:

On June 6, 2023, Manushya Foundation, together with partners, was at @RightsCon to highlight the threats to our rights in the digital space in Southeast Asia.
These include censorship, surveillance, and judicial harassment against activists.
The proposed @UNESCO 'Guidelines for Regulating Digital Platforms' has significant risks to human rights. Support the joint statement signed by civil society organisations (including @engagemedia).

#PushBackUNESCO
We are concerned that #UNESCO Guidelines for Regulating Digital Platforms will :
♦️Rubber stamp local over regulation
♦️Embolden authoritarian regulators
♦️Incentivize platforms to comply with illegitimate government requests
@UNESCO- Where are the safeguards?
#PushBackUNESCO
Dear @UNESCO – Your Guidelines for Regulating Digital Platforms carry significant risks.
Where are the safeguards?
We ask for a Human Rights Impact Assessment, incl. of civil society from authoritarian contexts.
