May is #VolcanoAwarenessMonth. This week, we focus on #hazfacts: Explosive eruptions blast rock fragments into the air with tremendous force. Though tiny, #ash can lead to airspace/airport closures with regional/global consequences. Or just be a nuisance, in small amounts.
Help support the next generation of geoscientists by becoming an On To the Future (OTF) mentor! We are looking for geoscientists across all sub-disciplines and career types to serve as OTF mentors at GSA Connects 2024 in Anaheim. We anticipate being able to offer travel and/or registration support this year. Learn more and apply by 31 May here: https://t.co/01oVstxDAa

On 8 April a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States & Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun & Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun.
People viewing the eclipse from locations where the Moon’s shadow completely covers the Sun – known as the path of totality – will experience a total solar eclipse. The sky will darken, as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people along the path of totality will see the Sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, which is usually obscured by the bright face of the Sun.
Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing.
Viewing any part of the bright Sun through a camera lens, binoculars or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury.
When watching the partial phases of the solar eclipse directly with your eyes, which happens before & after totality, you must look through safe solar viewing glasses (“eclipse glasses”) or a safe handheld solar viewer at all times. You can also use an indirect viewing method, such as a pinhole projector.
On 8 April @NOAA, @NSF & @NASA are hosting the "Sun, Moon & You Solar Eclipse Viewing Event" at the Fair Park Cotton Bowl® Stadium in downtown Dallas, with special guest speaker @neiltyson, as well as educational entertainment from the PBS television series Ready, Jet, Go!™ Additional experts from NOAA, NSF & NASA will talk about the eclipse, space weather & why we study the sun. This event is free to attend in person or virtually, learn more here: https://t.co/scOYodGtS8

As a GSA Member, your voice informs the future of the Society. This is never truer than in these times of change within the geosciences & beyond. Your elected representatives determine the Society's response as our science evolves & changes take place in our profession & our communities. Elected representatives help shape our collective future. That's why it’s so important that you read the information on each candidate posted on GSA's website during the election period & carefully consider what kind of direction & leadership they are likely to bring to GSA. It’s your Society, after all.
If you’re not a current GSA Member, we invite you to join today & help shape the future of geoscience: https://t.co/goKgtV3j8T
