#WATCH | Patna, Bihar | Indian National Bank Officers Congress President Ranjeet Kumar Chatterjee says, “The strike taking place across India today is an all-India strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions, comprising seven unions and involving 8 lakh employees nationwide. We have two primary demands: first, the implementation of a five-day banking week, a matter the government has been stalling on for a long time; and second, the issue of the Performance-Linked Incentive (PLI). The government implemented this PLI unilaterally, and it is highly discriminatory and fraught with disparities… Regarding the five-day banking week, there is blatant bias. All operate on a five-day schedule, while public sector banks are treated differently… Our demand is simply that banks remain closed every Saturday.”
Tonight’s headline is simple: public sector bank employees delivered ₹1.98 lakh crore net profit, but their promised five-day week remains stuck in official corridors. Meanwhile, revised PLI divides colleagues into winners and compulsory losers. Government policy cannot celebrate collective success and distribute selective justice. Bankers demand dignity, fairness and implementation—not another press statement.

Banking has transformed. Our working model must evolve with it.
Consider one remarkable number:
In FY2025-26, UPI accounted for 84% of India’s digital payments.
UPI processed more than 24,162 crore transactions worth around ₹314 lakh crore during the year.
As of July 2026, 741 banks were live on UPI.
Customers today bank through UPI, mobile banking, internet banking, ATMs, CRMs and other digital channels—far beyond traditional branch-counter hours.
Yet behind this digital revolution stands the same human workforce that builds systems, serves customers, processes credit, handles compliance, manages risk and keeps banks functioning.
Technology should improve banking and working conditions.
5-Day Banking does not mean less commitment. The proposed arrangement itself compensates through increased weekday working hours.
Modern banking deserves a modern workweek.
5-Day Banking is justified, negotiated and long overdue.

A parliamentary question to the policy makers: If a bank performs above 80%, why must 20% of its officers receive zero #PLI ? And if employees accepted longer daily hours, why must all Saturdays remain pending? This is not reform; it is administrative arithmetic without human fairness. Government must stop forced ranking and honour.

Fairness at work. Dignity in service. Equality in reward.
India’s bank employees are asking for two long-pending and legitimate demands:

The 5-Day Banking Week is not a new demand. It was already agreed upon in the Bipartite Settlement of March 2024. What employees seek now is only its timely implementation.
At the same time, PLI must be fair, transparent and inclusive—recognising the collective contribution of every employee, not rewarding a select few through a discriminatory system. Every deposit mobilised, every loan processed, every customer served and every target achieved is the result of teamwork.
Bank employees are not seeking special treatment.
They are seeking fairness, equality and implementation of what has already been agreed.
A valued workforce builds stronger banks and a stronger India.
