Yesterday, the State dismissed all remaining charges against me in relation to a mass open rescue I led in 2018. It was an absurd, 8-year process that involved a Court of Appeal reversing my conviction. But it means I am no longer a felon in CA (though one misdemeanor trespass conviction remains).

There are two very important implications for animals:

- First, the CA court of appeal came very close to outright saying that the trial court was wrong for asserting that animals are mere property under the common law. The opinion could have been cleaner on this. It should have. But what was written is sufficient to say that the common law is beginning to acknowledge animal personhood. That has dramatic implications for every animal currently suffering in confinement and abuse at commercial facilities across the nation. And it came from a chicken rescue.

- Second, it shows animal rights activists, even against enormous institutional opposition, can beat animal abusers in court. The resource discrepancy was probably 100:1 or more. But the thing about animal rights arguments is that... well, we are right. That is a massive advantage for us at every stage of the legal system. One thing that happened during the court of appeal argument, that was not legally relevant but still very instructive, was one of the judges saying out loud that there were 200,000 chickens inside a single factory farm. She gasped for a moment and said "Whoa!" It was as if the entire city of Santa Rosa were forced to live in a single industrial shed!

What this demonstrates to me, once again, is that the key bottleneck for a kinder world for animals is attention. Everywhere we force systems to pay attention, to confront the problem, we win.

So let's keep forcing the argument. If we do, the animals will soon be free.

Tricking the US Government to protect frontier labs’ business model by using a China boogeyman is a mistake.

It is protecting the equity of 5,000 people who are investors in OAI and Ant at the sale of everyone else. This would be a terribly stupid decision.

Let the market sort this out!

The events of the past few weeks may simply mean that the frontier labs’ business model is not good and that their revenues aren’t sustainable.

That’s ok. It’s ok to have a business model that worked for some time then all of a sudden didn’t (remember Groupon)!

This still leaves a lot of value for a lot of other American companies:

- CPUs
- GPUs
- hyperscalers
- neoclouds
- rack manufacturers
- electricity and power
- skilled trades
- application layer AI

None of this value goes away. In fact, if the model layers’ costs decrease by 10-100x, competition would accelerate and I would argue that the value to everyone else will go up more than what is lost.

Let the free market sort this out vs allowing two companies whose stock is owned by less than 5,000 people decide this for America.

BREAKING: Six animal advocates facing 10 years in prison for defending innocent calves just won full acquittal in the UK Supreme Court.

In 2022, 6 activists with @AnimalRising peacefully blocked a private road outside of Muller Dairy, the largest milk distributor in the UK. The company had been implicated in disturbing violence toward defenseless calves, including body slamming them, kicking/punching them in the head, and denying them access to food and water. The goal of the protest, which disrupted the business for 4 hours, was to highlight the abuses of factory farming and push for a plant-based future.

The UK government took no action against Muller, but it did charge the activists under a new statute passed in 2022 targeting protesters with severe penalties. Actions that should have been a low-level trespass suddenly became a "Crown Court offense" (the US equivalent of a felony) that could land each of the activists in prison for up to 10 years.

But in a shocking development, the trial court tossed out the prosecution and said the statute was intended to protect the "public" and not a private corporation, like Muller. Today, the UK Supreme Court upheld that decision.

I don't think anyone thought that the animal advocates could win in court, much less in the highest court of the land. They were defending the most powerless beings in our society—babies ripped from their mothers and prepared for slaughter—and they were going up against an economic giant.

And yet they did win. And there will be many more wins to come. Because the closer we look at what happens to the most defenseless beings, the more we realize that our entire system is broken.

And the more we demand change.
