“Mirrors are at the end of a long chain of reasoning”
Anyone concerned with energy and material limits to ‘the great transformation’ (not to speak of temporal, societal and biological limits) do give this a listen
@kmac@njhagens@aeberman12
🎙🫳@drvolts on the MEER project.
“I was excited to hear more from Tao about why he thinks it’s necessary, how it would work, the materials that would be required, and how the MEER framework changes the way we view carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. “ https://t.co/dARqMLSWcA
@GlobalEcoGuy Both can be true: seeing that technology has become more efficient but also remaining skeptical that without fundamental changes to capitalist social organization changes are temporary, low-hanging fruit or outweighed by the escalating scale of risk from lack of radical change
@AlexHeffron20 Despite what you correctly argue, the most dominant societies will continue to pursue the path of technologically enforced supremacy — the inequalities to come are going to be both more of the same and of staggering scale
@annac__b Alien vs predator belongs if you ask me even though of course it takes its cues on what constitutes justice from the colonizer’s perspective

@DoctorVive Oh no!
*cries the soul startled awake inside its golden casket*
What if everyone had to pay tax commensurate with their relative advantage?!
*returns to peaceful slumber, satisfied maximum accumulation remains the one true way*
@FredrikAlbritt1 @MGSchmelzer @timparrique It's as if there is recorded a laying bare of the driving force underlying capitalist expansion: cornucopia (in theory for all, but in practice limited to the relatively few) is what's left after abandoning the pretense of motivations other than the power to sustain profits
@SteB777 Indifference toward the ecological consequences of expanding economic activity is pretty much the ideal outcome if your priority is expanding economic activity
Hard to say what will happen but it isn’t an understatement to say that a future of #degrowth would be an absolute miracle. A miraculous future which we should pursue, but still a miracle.
@hausfath It would be quite the feat if escalating global heating was averted only for us all to witness the continued collapse due to some other systemic consequence of the “pioneering spirit” of the few
@Silvio_Marcacci @dwallacewells Just shows how depraved the people behind the original criticism were: fear, alarm even, is not a tactic, but a sincere response to a major threat
@seirl_@jasonhickel Except gains in GDP for developed nations over the past 50 years have disproportionately favored the capital class (not the people) and politics around protecting these gains have resulted in unparalleled subsidies for extractive industry (not the environment)
@timparrique I wonder when capitalists started being referred to as job creators? With that framing in place you’ve pretty much ensured democratic politics works to maximize rather than constrain capitalist enterprise.
@jmijincha@cunningham88 You’re correct in that the sun isn’t the problem but we also haven’t moved decisively on decarbonizing industry. At which point and under what circumstances might it make sense to use geoengineering to reverse the ongoing upturning of the heat dial due to fossil fuel use?
