It was great to speak with the people of Swannanoa today with @PratherForNC. The truth is that the Swannanoa Community needs more recovery support from the federal and state govt. And we need Ingles and the USPS to do their part by reopening the grocery store and post office.
@BlackLanterrn Yea, I think the actor has done pretty well with the very limited plot he’s been given. The recent college frat bro should definitely be the first to know his dad is on drugs. I was surprised when their confrontation did not include this.
News of the first NIH grant cuts at Columbia medical center have come in. Center grants (including of the diabetes center where I am), training grants for PhD students. PhD students are certainly not the reason for federal budget woes, they are among the most altruistically motivated people, often postponing their own personal dreams in favor of advancing human health. What an utter disappointment.
I’m 80 years old. I decided to call #SocialSecurity
“If you are calling about a disability application due to staffing reductions,
our average processing time for disability applications is 200 to 230 days.
The estimated hold time is greater than 120 minutes”
Trump berates Zelensky, the leader of a democratic country courageously fighting Russian imperialism, while he allies himself with Putin, a dictator who started the bloodiest European war in 80 years.
Sorry, President Trump. We believe in democracy, not authoritarianism.
Yesterday, Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts.
Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressional mandated. They've saved millions of lives. 🧵

The problem here is not a substance issue. It's not a process issue. It's an Oligarchy issue.
Imagine being worth $385 billion. It's enough to pay off every American's medical debt with plenty left over to feed the hungry, travel the world, buy whatever you wanted...
...but instead, you use it to hurt people. What kind of sick, sad, broken loser would do that, right?
Funding from the @NIH contributed to the development of 354 out of 356 (99.4%) of the new drugs approved by the FDA between 2010 and 2019, and 🚨 100% 🚨 of FDA approved drugs btw 2010-2016. @NIH funding is the backbone of American biomedical innovation. #protecttheNIH
i think it has not sunk in for people, including newspaper headline writers, that "probationary" employees does not just mean like, young novice staffers right out of college, but those who have received promotions in the last year
Have the @DOGE folks made it to the part of the system yet that shows private Medicare Advantage plans get paid by the government 22% more than costs would be in traditional Medicare?
There’s no gray area here. North Carolina will get hit very hard by NIH cuts, if said cuts continue. Don’t dismantle systems that you do not understand.

Proposed cuts to N.I.H. grants would hit just about every hospital and university that does medical research. We have estimates of the effects everywhere. (Including a table where you can look up places near you.)
My heart is breaking for the ~4000 staff that were fired at NIH this morning and the ones in intramural research awaiting emails telling them if they too are being fired. This includes anyone probationary:Research Fellows, Staff Scientists, GS employees, Tenure-tracks
