Israel's entire security strategy is built on one assumption: unconditional American support, forever.

Nearly one-third of wild sharks tested in the Bahamas have traces of human drugs, including caffeine, painkillers, and cocaine, in their bloodstream.

A new study has uncovered alarming evidence that pharmaceutical and illicit drug pollution is now entering the marine food web. Researchers collected blood samples from 85 wild sharks (including nurse sharks, Caribbean reef sharks, and juvenile lemon sharks) near Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas. They found that 28 individuals, roughly one-third of the sample, tested positive for at least one human-derived substance.

The detected compounds included caffeine (the most common), the painkillers acetaminophen and diclofenac, and, in one case, cocaine. These contaminants are believed to originate from wastewater discharge, tourist runoff, and possibly discarded drug packages that curious sharks investigate.

Sharks that tested positive showed noticeable changes in key metabolic markers related to stress and energy regulation, indicating that these substances are actively affecting their physiology. Earlier studies on other marine animals have shown that exposure to pharmaceuticals and stimulants can alter behavior, including feeding, swimming, and predator avoidance.

This research highlights how human chemical pollution extends far beyond visible plastic waste and is now detectable in the blood of top ocean predators.
